Adrian Corleonis
Fanfare, October 2001

"If you'd just like to become acquainted with these astounding pieces without mortgaging your home, this budget-priced, more accurately presented reissue will serve quite nicely. Naxos's upfront, uncramped sound is marginally better balanced than on either the Valois or Timpani discs. And the Trio Alkan's more leisurely approach, while it scants an essential manic edge, is rife with nuance. Indeed, there is more music in these works than meets the ear in any of these performances-the convicted Alkanist will want them all. Recommended."

Elaine Fine
American Record Guide, August 2001

"The Duo Concertant for violin and piano also comes out of several European traditions, the least of which sounds French, II, with the title 'L'enfer' (Hell), is particularly colourful, dramatic, and somewhat Wagnerian...

The playing here is excellent. The musicians keep the music continually enticing by bringing out all its unexpected textures and contrasts."

Leslie Gerber, June 2001

"It's an entertaining piece of music...The performances are thoroughly satisfying, the sound quality vivid, and the disc overall is a treat, especially for lovers of Romantic chamber music."
