Penguin Guide, January 2009

It is surprising that Bliss’s Piano Quartet is not better known, brim full of attractive melody and, in the hands of Peter Donohoe and the Maggini Quartet, is quite captivating. The later (1927) Oboe Quintet is mainly pastoral in feeling, but with a vigorous Vivace finale which quotes from Connell’s Jig. Nicholas Daniel is a nimble, elegant soloist and catches the work’s light-hearted mood to perfection. Bliss’s Sonata was written for Lionel Tertis. It is highly demanding for both participants, both in the rhapsodic expressive lyricism of the Andante and in the Furiant Scherzo. Martin Outram, with Julian Rolton a fine partner, rises to the occasion in a highly persuasive account of another work that deserves a more frequent hearing. Excellent recording throughout and good documentation.

"Hard upon the heels of the Maggini's eloquent performance of Bliss chamber music on Naxos 8.557108 (String Quartet No. 1; String Quartet in A; Conversations) comes this second volume, and it's every bit as good...The Maggini Quartet moves from strength to strength in this latest release. The Piano Quartet displays their glowing warmth of tone and carefully scaled dynamics; while the group's razor-sharp intonation and impeccable sense of ensemble easily pass the test of the Oboe Quintet's Vivace movement. [Nicholas Daniel] has the ease and control to bring off this technically challenging work. So, too, do Martin Outram (the Maggini's regular violist) in the Viola Sonata, and Peter Donohoe in the Piano Quartet. Excellent sound, detailed liner notes, and Naxos's competitive prices. What's not to like, here?"
