The Maggini’s complete outstanding cycle, arguably the finest British contribution to quartet literature. The Phantasy Quartet, with Martin Roscoe joining three of the quartet members, in seven sections lasting only 12 minutes, is another striking piece in Bridge’s early style. Passionate performances and vivid recording.
The Naxos label has been good to British composer Frank Bridge (1879-1941), with a superb recent recording of three orchestral works and two previous discs devoted to his music for string quartet. . . . These are all beautifully crafted works with real personalities, and they're played with true devotion by the Maggini Quartet and pianist Martin Roscoe. The sound is vivid and natural, but it would have been better yet with the microphones pulled back a couple of feet.
