Fanfare, October 2006

It didn't take long for me to determine that I was privy to extraordinary talent. The performances are replete with enthusiasm and momentum and, drawing upon a winning combination of instinct and convention, they evoke not only a distinct personality, but also exhibit poise, coupled with an exceptional sense of vitality and elegance. The energy generated by these young musicians is obvious from the get-go, as is their commitment to the repertoire. Vital and intellectually challenging, these curiosities repay the listener's interest time after time by way of their memorable and affable nature.

Lawson Taitte
The Dallas Morning News, March 2006

Rating: B+

DEDICATED TO HAYDN: In 1784, Mozart honored the older composer in publishing a group of string quartets. Haydn's star pupil, Ignaz Pleyel, did the same. Pleyel's pieces are far less ambitious – but enormously entertaining. It's fascinating to hear somebody in the Viennese inner circle who doesn't sound quite like either of the more famous masters. Pleyel writes good tunes, constructs soundly and is full of surprises. The quartets are in three movements, not four, and don't follow a formula.

A PROMISING DEBUT: On the album front, the four young players are striding down a colonnade at Houston's Rice University, where they were in residence for two years. They're a beautifully matched group, sweet in sound and energetic in execution.

BOTTOM LINE: Not earthshaking, but loads of fun."
