Kenneth Keaton
American Record Guide, September 2012

…all are exciting and exhilarating. The best are the works written for guitar: Paco de Lucia’s Guajiras, and Sergio Assad’s Spanish Impressions…The Rodrigo Toccata is a real discovery…it’s a remarkable work…I have no reservations with Aguirre’s playing. I don’t think anyone else could make these work better. © 2012 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide online

MusicWeb International, August 2012

…this one provides ample evidence of Aguirre’s talent. It’s a varied and interesting program that reflects the performer’s wide repertoire and good taste. It shows that he really is a complete performer. Virtuosity, sensuality, tenderness, and razzle-dazzle—it’s all there to enjoy.

There are a lot of good transcriptions here, beginning with an intermezzo from a zarzuela by Gerónimo Giménez. This opener immediately brushes aside any doubts about Aguirre’s technical ability and imaginative flair; it’s a total charmer. Carles Trepat…supplies arrangements of two pieces by Claude Debussy, which Aguirre renders with a mystery and sunlit impressionism suited to the originals. ‘Soirée dans Grenade’ is notable for the soloist’s marvellous soft touch. Aguirre himself offers a virtuoso arrangement of a movement, ‘Triana’, from Albéniz’s Iberia.

[Spanish Impressions] is a three-movement suite written for Rafael Aguirre. It’s an excellent contribution to the guitar repertoire—maybe the CD’s high point.

This one is fantastic. © 2012 MusicWeb International Read complete review

David's Review Corner, April 2012

Rafael Aguirre has spent much of his young life collecting a formidable catalogue of competition successes, including thirteen first prizes at prestigious events. This is the second time he has appeared on the Naxos label, and comes as a result of winning the 2010 ‘Alhambra’ International Guitar Competition. His programme is a mix of original scores and arrangements, at the heart of the disc the three-movement Spanish Impressions dedicated to Rafael Aguirre by Sergio Assad. It takes us on a virtuoso trip around the country…I much enjoy Aguirre in the more relaxed tracks, Carlos Trepat’s arrangements of Debussy in the Soiree dans Grenade from Estampes, and La Puerta del vino, from Preludes, two gorgeous performances perfectly shaped and lovingly played. …it is good to experience the exuberance and brilliance of the young, the Canadian recording team providing another example of their unmatched artistry. © David’s Review Corner
