David Denton
David's Review Corner, April 2014

Mari Fukumoto’s debut disc is issued to mark the first Japanese musician to take the premier prize in the Musashino-Tokyo International Organ Competition. As is usual with such discs, the esoteric programme was, no doubt, dictated by the works played in the competition’s various stages, though it means that her two major works—Bach’s Trio Sonata and the Prelude and Fugue—face alternative recordings by many great and famous organists. Putting aside one or two passages, she does emerge unscathed by such comparisons, her playing being neat and with a good sense of period taste. Fukumoto was only twenty-five when the disc was recorded, and it shows a very talented young lady. © 2014 David’s Review Center
