Die Csárdáfürstin tells an improbable tale of the mismatch between a showgirl, Sylva, and an aristocrat, Prince Edwin. Richard Bonynge conducts a lively, beautifully sprung performance, made the more idiomatic by using an East European orchestra. Yvonne Kenny as Sylva gives a characterful, idiomatic performance, well supported by singers very much in the operetta tradition, and by Michael Roider as Edwin and Mojca Erdmann and Marko Kathol as the second couple. Well produced, the numbers are introduced by a sprinkling of dialogue. The first-rate sound brings out the beauty of Kálmán’s orchestration.
