"This budget-price offering won't change your life but it's very likeable, as much for the quality of the composing as the playing. Pylkkanen is a Finnish reeds player whose pieces for sextet all carry something distinctive, often having several parts to them, rather than just the head-solos-head cliche. Superior arrangements are the icing on the cake.
The evocative 13 Seagulls has the leader creating seascape shades of Jan Garbarek, while acoustic guitar and piano circle one another gracefully. The instrumentation moves fluidly between acoustic jazz and more electric textures, with some interesting combinations, such as synth and bass clarinet on the head of The Strawberry Tree. The sound is good (despite some reverb overkill on the drums) and the constant shifts in mood keep it entertaining." 4-stars
