Bernard Jacobson
Fanfare, November 2003

Rachel Barton’s performance of the Brahms Violin Concerto, stimulatingly coupled with Joachim’s “Hungarian” Concerto, is a profoundly refreshing achievement. How wonderful to encounter a young violinist with the courage and individuality to play this classically poised yet warmly Romantic music with all the flexibility, panache, and emotional generosity it cries out for! Without ever degenerating into distortion, her expansion of the line in response to the progress of melody and harmony is a delight. She is supported every step of the way, in the unusually lifelike solo/tutti balance of James Ginsburg’s recording, by Carlos Kalmar and the Chicago Symphony. Her tone is as sweet as it is strong, and the inclusion as a supplementary track of her own cadenza adds to the interest of the set. © 2003 Fanfare Read complete review on Fanfare
