Jens F. Laurson
Ionarts, December 2011

There are no weak spots among the quartets; Mendelssohn moves from strength to strength. That the two first numbered quartets are the most popular is not surprising for a composer who wrote some of his finest music before he turned twenty. Just the slow movements of either of these quartets alone are a chamber music dream. Also liable to become dreamy when played with too little energy. © 2011 Ionarts

WETA 90.9 FM Blog, February 2011

It hasn’t been that long that Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quartets suffered from neglect in the recording catalog and the Melos Quartet (DG) seemed the only game in town. But my word, has that been remedied over the last ten, fifteen years. Now there are superb cycles from the Pacifica Quartet (Cedille)…

Raymond Beegle
Fanfare, November 2005

The musical discipline that has most steadfastly resisted this intrusion is the string quartet, and at the forefront of the newer groups is the remarkable Pacifica Quartet, as exemplified by this Mendelssohn recording. The ensemble seems to be built from the bottom up, with players possessing both virtuosity and poetry who provide the expressive first violinist a buoyant current on which to float. The sensibility of the group is quite old school, recalling the depth and romantic candor of the Budapest Quartet, and their impeccable blend, solid precision, and absolute unity of intent, cannot be faulted.

Fanfare, November 2005

I’ll vote for the brilliant young Pacifica Quartet, offering three discs for the price of two.
