The Chicago-based label Cedille, a trademark of the Chicago Classical Recording Foundation, has a rich legacy of important and groundbreaking releases in a variety of genres, so it comes as no surprise that they have chosen to honor one of our finest living poets with this sterling musical celebration, which one can only hope will lead to many more such tributes.
It would be a terrible mistake for anyone to skip past the three narrated works here, for they are certainly both entertaining and intriguing and provide a welcome, refreshing counterpoint to the pieces that are sung. One reason for that appealing contrast with the songs is that the narrator is not an actor seeking to set off highly charged theatrical sparks. The narrator is longtime WFMT classical music announcer Steve Robinson, and his understated, natural delivery allows the music to work its magic.
…Cedille has done this just right with excellent liner notes by WFMT’s Andrea Lamoreaux, biographic sketches of the poet, composers, and musicians, and full texts. Most importantly, of course, this release offers up first rate performances of superb new works that demonstrate so clearly the special magic that is possible when great words are wed to great music. © 2012 Read Periodicals Read complete review
