With Edita Gruberová still in reasonably good voice in the coloratura, undoubtedly touching in the Mad Scene (although now no match vocally for Sutherland in her famous early début CD…this is an impressive if uneven performance, and of course Gruberová hardly looks like a young country girl. But Deon van der Walt looks good as Carlo and he sings ardently, and the rest of the cast are vocally reliable, Jacob Will as the Marquis and Cornelia Kallisch as Pieretto much more than that. The staging with its drapes is not too distracting and the video direction is acceptable. Best of all is the splendid contribution of chorus and orchestra, stylishly and vividly directed by Adam Fischer and very well recorded. A stopgap, perhaps, but a generally enjoyable one.
