Fanfare, November 2012

…two early ballets by John Cranko that merit revival for a certain charm, bittersweet in the case of The Lady and the Fool…And what a treat to see dancers the likes of Svetlana Beriosova, Merle Park, and David Blair who would be equally at home among the current crop of stars. © 2012 Fanfare Read complete review

Fanfare, March 2012

ICA Classics places us once more in its debt with two ballets by John Cranko that were filmed in 1959 by the BBC. And not only can we see these two early works illustrating the acclaim showered on the choreographer at the time, but we can also appreciate the talents of Charles Mackerras, who concocted these two scores, one using music from works by Verdi that were virtually unknown in the early 1950s, the other using music by Arthur Sullivan, whose music entered public domain in 1951… The stories told in these one-act ballets are simple to follow, the steps engaging, and the pathos of Lady and the Fool deeply touching. Svetlana Beriosova captures the elusive quality required but is touching in the love she offers Ronald Hynd as Moondog. Ray Powell’s Bootface is deeply moving as he goes off alone at the end. And all this to scintillating Verdi.

Pineapple Poll features the young Merle Park alongside David Blair in a role he created. Both are virtuoso dancers… In all, a worthy follow-up to Giselle and Les Sylphides , and we can only hope that more of this treasure trove will be forthcoming… © 2012 Fanfare Read complete review on Fanfare

MusicWeb International, January 2012

The two ballets presented here are contrasting tales. One, Pineapple Poll, is a gay, light-hearted romp whilst the other, The Lady and the Fool is bittersweet: both are technically comedies.

What criticisms of this DVD can I make? Virtually none.

It is wonderful to have these two masterpieces of balletomania easily available. At present this is the only version of either work on DVD. It may be for a ballet company in the future to revive one or both of these ballets but at present this is a splendid addition to the catalogues. It is not to be missed by ballet enthusiasts, G&S cognoscenti and lovers of obscure but delightful Verdi! © 2012 MusicWeb International Read complete review
