The Tunisian pianist Jean-Marc Luisada recorded the mazurkas for Deutsche Grammophone in 1991. Newton has reissued them (8802038, two discs). The province of Poland in which Warsaw is located is called Mazowsze; its people are called Mazurs. The mazurka is a dance based on their folk music. Chopin took the dance and turned it into 28 masterpieces. In a previous review, TC called them “a wonderful collection of short pieces that can be harmonic or melodic masterpieces; some of them are both.” They are also the most playful music the composer ever wrote for piano.
