Chopin playing of the highest artistry from Michelangeli, recorded in Milan in 1962. The visual side of the recording is in black-and-white, but his piano playing is full of colour. The clarity of articulation is phenomenal, as is the subtlety of his tone colouring. The B flat minor Sonata is one of the great performances on record, and the delicacy of the Andante spianato is pretty breathtaking. Michelangeli always insisted on a narrow range of camera angles and no facial close-ups, so that the somewhat static camera angels never intrude or disturb the extraordinary concentration he commands. Altogether outstanding performances throughout. The recorded sound is quite acceptable…
