This recital was filmed and recorded by RAI at Turin in 1962 and is in black-and-white. The playing is anything but. Michelangeli plays with an amazingly wide range of colour and refinement of dynamics and touch. His concentration, sense of atmosphere and pianism are at their finest. Forget the feeble documentary of 1959—not for the hagiography, but for the crass questions of the self-satisfied interviewer. However, it does give us a glimpse of the pianists who take part in the annual festival in Arrezo, including Adam Harasiewicz, who had won the Chopin Prize a few years earlier. But, as Debussy playing, Michelangeli’s performances take some beating.
