Giv Cornfield, Ph.D.
The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, June 2007

This delightful one-act Opera Buffa is Rossini's last Italian work, and was premiered in Paris in 1825 to celebrate the coronation of King Charles X. What is remarkable about this production by Alain Maratrat is that the entire cast is Russian, though watching it, one would never suspect that they are not west-Europeans. Maratrat's colourful and witty rendition places the orchestra onstage, while the pit is bridged by gangways (as in fashion shows), allowing the singers to move into and mingle with the audience. Anastasia Belyaeva as Madame Cortese is a standout: Sassy, pretty, and what a voice! The entire production is state-of-the-art Rossini at his best.
