Best Recordings of 2011 – “Almost List”

WAGNER, R.: Meistersinger von Nurnberg (Die) (Bayreuth Festival, 2008) (NTSC) OA1041D
WAGNER, R.: Meistersinger von Nurnberg (Die) (Bayreuth Festival, 2008) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7078D

With principles Franz Hawlata (Sachs), Klaus Florian Vogt (Stolzing), Michael Volle (Beckmesser) and a superb rest of a cast (the 2007 weak spot, Amanda Mace’s Eva, is replaced by Michaela Kaune), this Meistersinger is musically top notch—a fine junior partner alongside Kubelik, Sawallisch, and [yes!] Goodall. © 2012 Ionarts See complete list

WAGNER, R.: Meistersinger von Nurnberg (Die) (Bayreuth Festival, 2008) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7078D

Director Katharina Wagner, the composer’s great grand-daughter, turns “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg” (Opus Arte Blu-ray DVD) on its head at the 2008 Bayreuth Festival. Beckmesser’s creative spirit is “liberated” in Act 2 by a paint-throwing riot. Rules gone, his “prize” song in Act 3 involves uncovering a naked man on a table full of dirt. It’s art gone wild, anything goes, but all is chillingly quelled by a conservative Hans Sachs. It is an intriguing concept, certainly one worth experiencing once.

Times Square, January 2011

Katharina Wagner’s ill-fated update of her great-grandfather’s comic epic Der Meistersinger von Nurnberg (Opus Arte Blu-ray) created a scandal at Bayreuth in 2008: many of her ideas are foolish, but she sticks it out, and the result, though wrongheaded, is  fascinating, with splendid vocal performances from her leads (lone extra: making-of featurette)
