PERGOLESI, G.B.: Adriano in Siria (Pergolesi Spring Festival, 2010) (NTSC) OA1065D
PERGOLESI, G.B.: Adriano in Siria (Pergolesi Spring Festival, 2010) (Blu-ray, HD) OABD7098D

Adriano in Siria is a Baroque opera and a prime example of the genre of opera seria, a stylized form that was to dominate Italian opera production for nearly the entire first half of the 18th century. In 2010 the Pergolesi Spontini Foundation in Peri announced it would be helping to underwrite the production and video recording of all of Pergolesi’s operas and intermezzos, the first two of which are seen here. Interpolated between the three acts of Adriano is the short comedic intermezzo Livietta e Tracollo.

This production from the small regional opera house in Jesi is quite charming. All of the six young singers seen on the video sing exceptionally well in this music…The small Baroque pit band propels the action well…The intermezzo seen between acts of the main opera is quite charming as well. Two singers, including the only one here I’d ever heard of before, mezzo Monica Bacelli, drive the comedic action of this piece…it makes a refreshing break from the more serious opera.

This production is…a fascinating glimpse of a genre long dead, performed and sung well…It is much more compelling visually in the Blu-ray format. I enjoy it; you just might as well. Conductor Ottavio Dantone talks about the opera, the composer, and this production in the interesting bonus feature. © 2012 Fanfare Read complete review

a fine performance featuring the zesty playing of Accademia Bizantina. The arias for Farnaspe…are dramatically and musically accomplished, especially the gorgeous ‘Lieto così tal volta’… Emirena is sung superbly by Lucia Cirillo…and Nicole Heaston’s performance as Sabina is simply sensational, from her immaculate long-held high notes…to flawless wide leaps of an octave and a half and wonderful embellishments… This is an exceptionally fine production that offers a great deal of integrity and fascination. © 2012 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone

Lawrence Devoe, January 2012

Viewers who are new to this early opera genre will find Adriano in Siria to be a real ear-opener. There is sumptuous vocalism with plenty of show piece arias for the principal voices who are an outstanding ensemble. The Accademia Bizantia and its leader Ottavio Dantone have this repertoire in their genes and I would doubt that you will hear such a rarely performed work done any better anywhere. Further, this Blu-ray gets fabulous audio and video recording, making it a benchmark for any future productions if any will come our way. When I watch unfamiliar works, and believe me Adriano in Siria is one of those works, I always look for some magic moments. In this production, American soprano Nicole Heaston supplied many of these and is a name to watch for. The present Blu-ray is the premiere of what is probably Pergolesi’s masterpiece and I can think of no better way to get it across to the larger audience that it deserves. © 2012 Read complete review
