Christopher Abbot
Fanfare, September 2011

…the performance makes a very enjoyable listening experience.

… the “Chorus Mysticus” is effectively solemn and stately at the beginning, building slowly to a final verse that falls short of the kind of majestic conclusion that can make this symphony a truly transcendent experience. Rattle paces his finale beginning with a warmer choral entry, and with a more flexible ebb and flow, letting the momentum peak at the second “Alles Vergängliche,” then crowning the performance with a much more satisfyingly climactic orchestral coda.
