THE SPECIALIST’S GUIDE TO…Hans Christian Andersen

Bob McQuiston
Classical Lost and Found, December 2013

The Finnish National Opera Orchestra conducted by the composer makes a strong case for this brilliantly scored holiday offering. Moreover, communities having ballet companies, particularly those with children, might want to consider it as a refreshing alternative to the usual Christmas fare.

…the recording presents a robust soundstage in a reverberant acoustic that will appeal to those liking wetter sonics. The Ondine engineers give us a well-focused image of the considerable forces involved, which include a number of exotic instruments. The disc seems cut at a high level, which probably explains the bright upper end. That coupled with a pleasing musical midrange and profound, transient bass make this release a sound investment. © 2013 Classical Lost and Found Read complete review

Kantelinen has written scores for more than 30 films, and this opulent suite from his recent Christmas ballet also features chunks of easy listening.  Splendid performance and recording. © 2013 BBC Music Magazine

Cinemusical, November 2013

Ondine’s cover and packaging certainly pulls together aspects of holiday inspiration in attractive design. Ondine’s sound for this release is stellar capturing perfectly the orchestra with a real depth and crispness that further highlights this score. This is a gorgeous work that is certainly worth adding to your music library! © 2013 Cinemusical Read complete review
