Paul Turok
Turok’s Choice, March 2009

A reissue contains two fine Mozart performances by Gary Bertini with the Cologne Radio Chorus and Orchestra, the Mass in C Minor and the Requiem (128, two discs). The solo singing is magnificent: Auger, Soffel, Moser, Roberts in the Mass and Laki, Soffel, Swensen and Quasthoff in the Requiem. Recorded in 1986 (Mass) and 1991, the sound on this reissue is first rate.

Giv Confield
The New Recordings, Cliffs Classics, September 2008

These recordings date from 1991, but sound as good as any large-scale works made today. It is not easy to capture such works on disc and give individual soloists their due, especially in live recordings such as these. This is a mixed blessing, since the soprano in the C minor Mass would not qualify for La Scala, while quite the opposite is the case in the Requiem. But at two for the price of one, it's worth having if for the fine Requiem alone., September 2008

The pleasures of Mozart are of a higher sort, and perhaps never higher than in the Requiem and the “Great” Mass in C minor. These recordings conducted by Gary Bertini—originally dating to 1991—feature top-notch choral singing, first-rate orchestral playing, and two different sets of solo voices, each of them excellent. For the Mass, there are soprano Arleen Auger, mezzo-soprano Doris Soffel, tenor Thomas Moser and bass Stephen Roberts.
