Label of the Month – Marco Polo

Marco Polo was the first label in the Naxos family to be launched, in 1982. It includes almost 1,000 recordings of works by both familiar and little known composers, light music, film music and world music – a veritable feast of new listening experiences.

With many rarities drawn from the period 1850–1940 as its hallmark, the Marco Polo catalogue boasts a discovery on every page – from Cimarosa to Chen Gang, plus all stops in between.

One of the many distinctions of the catalogue is the significant inclusion of the complete works of members of the Strauss family – Johann I, Johann II and Josef – in multi-volume editions, to which waltzes and polkas by Eduard Strauss have recently been added. The Marco Polo catalogue also features many works by other light classical composers such as Waldteufel and Suppé, and numerous British light music composers.

There's a generous choice of album compilations, representing a rich tapestry of music in different styles and from a variety of countries. Chinese classics occupy a large portion of the catalogue, featuring traditional fare alongside classical works by both the older and contemporary generations of composers, with new releases added regularly.

While globalisation advances, all countries staunchly retain two unique features: their distinctive national flag and a bonding national anthem. The anthems reflect an enormous indigenous diversity, but relatively few are generally known by citizens of other nations, making any comprehensive compendium a source of endless interest and discovery. We invite you to take a musical tour of Marco Polo’s definitive set of national and regional anthems, from Algeria to Kuwait, Lapland to Zanzibar, and all stops in between. You’ll be delighted by the gems that are waiting to be discovered and compiled into either personal or family favourites. And you can check out the flags in the process with our informative supporting booklets! Welcome to the Marco Polo boxed set of THE COMPLETE NATIONAL ANTHEMS OF THE WORLD.

More lost gems are unearthed in this fourth volume of music by contemporaries of the Strauss family. This programme takes us from rousing galops and polkas to gentler salon pieces and waltzes, including music from the era of the fateful Titanic and the changing tastes of the 1920s. It includes orchestral premieres and reconstructions from scant sources, representing a vivid cross section of popular music from a century and more ago.

‘…Excellent series, in which John Georgiadis leads the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice with just the right blend of enthusiasm and piquancy.’Infodad.com

Eduard Strauss was overshadowed by his more famous elder siblings Johann II and Josef but his music from the 1870s and 1880s easily stands comparison with theirs, and in the dance genres of the quick polka and the galop he was in a class of his own. These world premiere recordings of ‘handsome Edi’s’ music include the beguiling waltz Freie Gedanken or ‘Free Thoughts’ written for the ‘Hesperus’ Artists’ Association, and the charming polka-mazurka Schmeichelkätzchen (‘Little Flatterer’), which was popular enough with Viennese audiences to be reprised throughout that season.

‘All the music is charming and enjoyable and like Volume 1 the performances are energetic and beautiful.’American Record Guide

Conductor Robert Trevino signs a recording deal with Ondine

Robert Trevino | © Håkan Röjder

Ondine is happy to announce a multi-year recording deal with conductor Robert Trevino.

Robert Trevino, one of today's most in-demand American conductors of the younger generation, has signed with Ondine for a major, ongoing recording relationship. Trevino is chief conductor of the Basque National Orchestra and of the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, both of which will feature in the first releases – a complete Beethoven symphonies cycle drawn from this season’s Beethoven Festival in Malmö and, with the Basque National Orchestra, a survey of American repertoire to include neglected works by Howard Hanson – as well as digital releases of core repertoire works.

"Ondine chooses the artists with whom it works very carefully," says the label's founding director Reijo Kiilunen, "We try to find the special few; great artists who perform visionary and imaginative interpretations of standard repertoire and who also have an adventurous mind in presenting the public with fascinating lesser-known musical discoveries. Robert Trevino is a perfect match for these qualities. He is, already, a conductor of real musical power with a highly original, probing mind. I am thrilled to welcome him to the Ondine family."

Trevino, a self-confessed avid lover of recordings and the recording process, confesses that, "I have had my heart set on Ondine for a long time. Their Sibelius recordings under Leif Segerstam have long been absolute favourites of mine, paragons of how the production- and interpretive-sides can come together to make something to treasure. I knew that I wanted to be part of that tradition. Meeting Reijo only increased my delight at becoming an Ondine artist. I very much look forward to doing great work with Ondine and with my orchestras; with partners such as these it becomes a joy."

The complete Beethoven symphonies recordings with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra arise out of the Beethoven Festival that Trevino is leading in Malmö this season. This makes them a natural place to start. The soloists for the Ninth Symphony are as follows: Kate Royal (soprano), Christine Rice (mezzo),Tuomas Katajala (tenor) and Derek Welton (bass). The choir will be the MSO Festival Chorus. The Beethoven recordings will all be made at the MSO's new, much-vaunted Malmö Live Concert Hall.

The Basque National Orchestra releases, meanwhile – starting with a recording of American repertoire featuring for example works by Howard Hanson – will be recorded at their home in the city of Donostia-San Sebastián. The producer for all of these recordings will be Ingo Petry.

Celebrate Beethoven
BEETHOVEN, L. van: Edition (Complete) (90 Discs)

Celebrate Beethoven – The complete edition and new recordings with Boris Giltburg, Christian Tetzlaff and Sophie-Mayuko Vetter

The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Luwig van Beethoven’s Birth in Bonn, Germany. One of the most influential composers in (western) Classical Music, Beethoven is considered one of the greatest composers of all time.

The Naxos Music Group has released five recordings of Beethoven music recently, ahead of the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth next year: On Naxos, Boris Giltburg’s recording of Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2 with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Vasily Petrenko; the third volume in Naxos new edition of Beethoven’s orchestral works performed by Leif Segerstam and the excellent Turku Philharmonic Orchestra; Music for Winds performed by a distinguished line-up of players; on Ondine, Star violinist Christian Tetzlaff performs Violin Concerto with the DSO Berlin under the baton of its new music director Robin Ticciati; and on OehmsClassics, Sophie-Mayuko Vetter performs Piano Concertos Nos. 0, 2 and 6 with Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and Peter Ruzlcka.

8.500250

Last but not least, Naxos is very pleased to present its Complete Beethoven Edition on November 1. This boxed set of 90 discs spans orchestral, concerto, keyboard, chamber, music for the stage, choral and vocal works, encompassing his most familiar and iconic masterpieces, alongside rarities and recently reconstructed fragments and sketches, some in world premiere recordings. The roster of artists and ensembles includes some of Beethoven’s greatest contemporary exponents, in performances that have won critical acclaim worldwide.

8.574151

Naxos artist Boris Giltburg has swept up numerous awards for his Liszt recordings, but one of his first releases for Naxos was of piano sonatas by Beethoven. It certainly made an impact on the critics: ‘...a powerful mix of astounding technique, gripping drama, and interpretive insight. …This is great pianism and great Beethoven playing at its very best.’ (Fanfare) So, we can all look forward with confidence to the success of Boris' next foray into Beethoven via the composer's first two piano concertos with their abundance of lyric and virtuosic qualities. Add to this the names of conductor Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, who astounded everyone with their world-beating Naxos edition of Shostakovich's symphonies, and we really do have a treat in store.

The latest Gramophone Podcast features Boris Giltburg, in an interview about his new Naxos recording of Beethoven's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and conductor Vasily Petrenko. Listen to the podcast on www.gramophone.co.uk. The next album will be released in Spring 2020.

8.573956

The fourth volume in Naxos new edition of Beethoven’s orchestral works performed by Leif Segerstam and the excellent Turku Philharmonic Orchestra features the entire incidental music written for Goethe’s play Egmont, not just the ever popular overture. Very few alternative recordings are available of this full version, with the sequence of movements taking us through the dramatic gamut of the play, from tragic darkness to moral triumph. It cements Segerstam's assertion that he has a ‘special place for Beethoven between my ears.’ He receives excellent support here from soprano Kaisa Ranta, known internationally for her recitals and opera roles, while the narration of Egmont is strikingly delivered by the renowned Wagnerian Finnish bass Matti Salminen. This album has won critical acclaim, including ‘Disc of the Week’ by BBC Radio 3, Gramophone’s ‘Recording of the Month’ and a 5-star review from The Guardian.

8.573942

Beethoven again has the wind in his sails with this tremendous release of music for wind ensemble, a genre that formed a regular part of entertainment in the composer's day. Included on the programme, for example, is his Sextet for winds in E flat major that was well received by a critic at the time for its ‘splendid melodies, leisurely harmonic flow, and wealth of new and surprising ideas.’ The works on the recording may have been frequently recorded, but never before by such a distinguished line-up of players. With professorships at leading institutions such as the Yale School of Music, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Adelphi University and others, this is as influential a team of wind players as you could imagine. Beethoven enthusiasts and lovers of wind music will be beating a path to hear their take on these repertoire evergreens.

ODE1334-2

Christian Tetzlaff, one of the greatest violinists of our time, performs these two cornerstone works of the violin repertoire with the DSO Berlin under the baton of its new music director Robin Ticciati. Among his lengthy tally of awards, Tetzlaff was named Artist of the Year by the ICMA in 2015, and Instrumentalist of the Year in the 2017 OPUS Klassik awards. This album features the violin concertos by Beethoven and Sibelius. Both concertos are much more than virtuosic showpieces; they embody music of enormous depth and feeling that did much to immortalise both composers. These interpretations simply must not be missed.

OC1710

Pianist Sophie-Mayuko Vetter presents the world premiere recording of a reconstruction of around 70 pages of sketches for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 6 in D major (fragment) by Nicholas Cook and Hermann Dechant. Another special feature of this release is that the Piano Concerto ‘No. 0’ in E flat major, WoO 4 is heard in period style, performed on a fortepiano made by the London piano manufacturer John Broadwood in 1806. The expressive and harmonically rich vocabulary of the Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, Op. 19 clearly demonstrates the young Beethoven’s development as an autonomous Viennese classicist.

Sophie-Mayuko Vetter has been praised as an artist of extraordinary expressivity and versatility by press and colleagues alike. Her previous recording on OehmsClassics received an ICMA nomination and was awarded a Supersonic rating by Pizzicato: ‘Deeply felt performances of two Mozart concertos, where Sophie-Mayuko Vetter’s playing can be compared with that of Clara Haskil, Géza Anda or the young Barenboim.’

The Gramophone Award for Best Contemporary Recording went to Opus Arte, one of Naxos' affiliated labels, for their audiovisual release of Brett Dean's opera Hamlet (OA1254D).

‘Screen viewing allows for total focus on an astonishing central performance from Allan Clayton. His portrayal of Hamlet’s decline would be noteworthy even without singing that is full of expressive meaning and always imbued with stringent beauty even in rage’Gramophone

Tianwa Yang plays Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole

Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie espagnole brims with attractive melodies and bristles with ingenious and virtuosic passagework reflecting the phenomenal technique of its dedicatee, Pablo de Sarasate. The work is a significant part of star-violinist Tianwa Yang’s repertoire, performed numerous times a year. With GRAMMY-nominated conductor Darrell Ang, Yang displays her stunning virtuosity and techniques, a collaboration that Fanfare has noted as ‘worth watching.’ [Naxos 8.573067]

Now available exclusively on Apple Music, this visual album shows off Tianwa Yang’s quicksilver technique, playing repertoire that is ingenious and virtuosic, with an indelibly Iberian feel.

Jazz artist Joel Lyssarides’s new release concert

Jazz artist Joel Lyssarides’s new release concert

Star pianist and acclaimed composer Joel Lyssarides recently released a new album A Better Place. His debut album Dreamer on Prophone now has over 2.5 million streams on Spotify and received critical acclaim.

His second album, A Better Place, is a conversation with Esbjörn Svensson, Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett with inspiration from J.S. Bach and Rachmaninov. A full-house release concert was held successfully on October 13 at the Södra Theater, Stockholm.

‘The creative process of this album was very different from my previous one, where I could pick and choose from songs that I had had years to complete. This time the music was created during mere hours over the course of a few evenings. There is a magic in the moment when improvising that I’ve found difficult to recreate afterwards. ”A Better Place” consists mostly of written down improvisations and then recorded with the trio without further processing. I think one tends to make better musical decisions on the spot, instead of at the desk where time is unlimited.’Joel Lyssarides

Joel Lyssarides recently received this year’s Best Musician of the Year award by Sveriges Radio/Jazzkatten for the outstanding performance of his well-received debut album.

C5386

Dohnányi’s Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 9 was one of the Hungarian composer's early successes. Chief among the work's late Romantic influences is that of Brahms. Dohnányi treads a path of early Neo-Romanticism – a continuation of the 19th century style that avoids the expressionist violence of early 20th-century modernism. His authoritative treatment of the large orchestra is reminiscent of Mahler and Richard Strauss, teeming in details that are a hallmark of the quality of the work.

His Symphonic Minutes, Op. 36 was written in 1933; the five short movements were incorporated into a larger ballet project.  This album launches a new Capriccio series of recordings of Dohnányi’s works that remain less well known, but deserving of a much wider audience.

Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice
the Berlioz version

Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice – the Berlioz version

In 1859 Berlioz created a hybrid version of Orphée et Eurydice based on those Gluck prepared for performances in Parma, Paris and Vienna. Berlioz meticulously prepared his version using Gluck’s original manuscripts – an approach rare at the time. Stage director Aurélien Bory sees this version as a true choral opera, one that was described as ‘just breathtaking’ by OperaJournal. The young French mezzo-soprano Marianne Crebassa delivers a thoughtful and expressive Orphée, along with French Canadian soprano Hélène Guilmette as Eurydice, and the French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre as Amour. Ensemble Pygmalion, conducted by Raphaël Pichon, were admired by Le Monde for their ‘perfection of intonation’ and ‘spiritual cohesion’.
