- Francesco Cilea. Opera in four acts. 1897.
- Libretto by Leopoldo Marenco, after Alphonse Daudet’s L’Arlésienne (The Girl from Arles).
- First performance at the Teatro Lirico, Milan, on 17th November 1897.
In an opera that gave Enrico Caruso his first great success, Cilea sets the story of love and despair by Daudet, in which Federico eventually takes his own life, when it seems that the girl from Arles is another’s. The original play by Daudet was staged with incidental music by Georges Bizet in Paris in 1872.
Most familiar of the music is the tenor È la solita storia (It is the accustomed story).
