Anna Nicole is based on the life of Anna Nicole Smith, a Playboy model who married a man 60 years her senior and died tragically early of an accidental drug overdose. Turnage’s controversial opera came with a warning that the work contained sex, drugs and strong language. It also contained a variety of musical styles and gave rise to a very mixed critical reception and the threat of a lawsuit.
