Ascanius, the son of Aeneas, grandson of Venus, is to marry Silvia, who is allowed, in a pastoral setting, to see her future husband’s image. In spite of her uncertainties, all ends well.

Mozart wrote Ascanio in Alba for the wedding celebrations of the Habsburg Archduke Ferdinand to Maria Ricciarda Berenice d’Este in Milan. The piece contains complimentary references to the couple and their ancestry.
