HONEGGER, ARTHUR
Aventures du roi Pausole, Les (The Adventures of King Pausole)

  • Arthur Honegger. Operetta in three acts. 1929–30.
  • Libretto by Albert Willemetz from a novel by Pierre Louÿs.
  • First performance at the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens, Paris, on 12th December 1930.

King Pausole lives a peaceful life with his 366 wives, until his daughter elopes with a pretty dancer, disguised as Prince Charming. Accompanied by Giglio and the Grand Eunuch Taxis, the embodiment of moral order, with a tendency to frequent biblical quotation, Pausole sets out to find his daughter.

Honegger’s operetta Les Aventures du roi Pausole, based on a novel that had once been suggested for a work by Debussy, provides a witty score to match the satire of the text.
