GOEHR, ALEXANDER
Arden Must Die (Arden muss sterben)

  • Alexander Goehr. Opera in two acts. 1967.
  • Libretto by Erich Fried, based on Holinshed and on the Elizabethan play Arden of Feversham.
  • First performance at the Staatsoper, Hamburg, on 5th March 1967.

Alexander Goehr’s opera had and retains a distinct contemporary relevance, in its study of the abdication of moral involvement by the good neighbours of Arden, whose murder has been arranged by his wife and her lover. At its first performance in Hamburg the opera seemed to make its point very clearly, arousing a consequent reaction in its audience.
