While John Adams' 1987 minimal music opera NIXON IN CHINA follows the protocol of an actual US presidential trip to revolutionary China, the Berlin theatre collective Hauen und Stechen fires up its insatiable machine of association and interpretation in its new production at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Between pop art and propaganda aesthetics, trash-fy and retro revue, palatable surrealism and over-the-top comics, a visual stress bordering on the overdone is evoked here. At the same time, the music spins its relentless circles in captivating beauty.
