THEME AND VARIATIONS – PART I

MARIA STRATIGOU

‘For this next volume in the series, I decided to record the first part of her Theme & Variations sets. The Introductions that precede each theme have a sense of orchestral writing, and the slow variations portray some strong melodic lines, while the themes and the faster variations demonstrate once more the elegance and finesse, charm, wit, and humorous character of her works. My heart holds a special place for her Op. 2, as this is the first known composition by Louise Farrenc, and it is the first piece of hers that I studied and performed seven years ago; the sorrow, the depth of emotions, and the quality of compositional techniques found in the fifth Variation of this set are remarkable.’ – Maria Stratigou
