The medium of guitar duo has established an increased presence in the world's concert halls. This month's new release of concertos for two guitars showcases Cuban composer Leo Brouwer and the Brazilian composer Paulo Bellinati. Their works are performed by the brilliant guitarists João Luiz and Douglas Lora who, as the Brasil Guitar Duo, gave the first performance of Bellinati's concerto in 2012. This recording follows the duo's splendid recording of Brouwer's music for two guitars (8.573336) that was awarded a 10/10 rating by for being “ … technically impeccable and stylistically right on the money.”

These two concertos show the increasing importance of the guitar duo on the world’s concert stages. Leo Brouwer, one of the foremost Latin American composers, has written many admired guitar concertos but The Book of Signs is his first for two guitars, a double concerto of great virtuosity, with a majestic, songful theme in its central movement. A crucial figure in the global promotion of Brazilian rhythms for the guitar, Paulo Bellinati deploys luxurious harmonies and brilliantly effective techniques to pay tribute to the country music of São Paulo State in Concerto Caboclo.
