Chinese Artists on Naxos

Tianwa Yang, violin

Of Beijing descent, Tianwa Yang started studying the violin at the age of four, soon winning six out of the seven violin competitions she entered. At the age of ten she was accepted into the Central Conservatory of Music, Bejing, and by the following year media in Hong Kong described her as “A Pride of China”. Following her performance at the 1999 Beijing Music Festival, Isaac Stern invited her to study with him in the USA. Since then she has establish an international career.

Chen Jie, piano

Jie Chen is no doubt one of the most exciting young artists in today’s classical music scene. She is winner of numerous prestigious prizes in international competitions, including the Arthur Rubinstein Piano Master Competition in Israel, the Santander Paloma O’Shea International Competition in Spain, the Van Cliburn International Competition and the Piano-E-International Competition in Spain.

Huang Chu-Fang (pianist)

A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, Huang Chu-Fang received her Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma from the Juilliard School. She took First Prize in the 2005Cleveland International Piano Competition and was a Finalist in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, before winning First Prize in the 2006 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. She performs worldwide.

Colleen Lee, piano

Colleen Lee trained at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and since 2003 has been studying at the Hanover Hochschule für Musik und Theater. She was the only female laureate at the Fifteenth Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition, and has performed with orchestras and in a number of festivals around the world.

Lin Cho-Liang, violin

Cho-Liang Lin is a violinist whose career has spanned the globe for 27 years. He was born in Taiwan in 1960 and began playing the violin at the age of five. He went on to study in Sydney and New York City where he was a student of Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School. Since his début at Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival at the age of nineteen, he has appeared with virtually every major orchestra in the world.

Wang Xia-Yin

An artist with a winning combination of consummate technical brilliance, fine musicianship and personal verve, the pianist Xiayin Wang wins the hearts of audiences wherever she appears. As recitalist, chamber musician and orchestral soloist in such venues as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, she has earned a place among the musical elect of her generation, winning high critical praise.

Chinese Composers on Naxos

Zhou Long

Zhou Long was born in Beijing in 1953. Following graduation from the Central Conservatory in 1983, was appointed composer-in-residence with the China National Broadcasting Symphony. Zhou has received several prestigious fellowships and commissions around the world. He is the recipient of the 2003 Academy Award in Music.

Chen Yi

Chen Yi is a Distinguished Professor at the Conservatory of the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the recipient of the prestigious Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her music has been commissioned and performed world-wide. She was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2005, and appointed the Changjiang Scholar Professor at the CCOM by the China Ministry of Education in 2006.

Bright Sheng

Shanghai-born Bright Sheng studied music composition at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music before obtaining his M.A. from Queens College, where he studied composition and conducting under Leonard Bernstein, and his D.M.A. from Columbia University. He is now one of the leading Chinese-American composers of his generation.

Huang Ruo

Recently awarded First Prize by the prestigious Luxembourg International Composition Prize, Huang Ruo has been cited by The New Yorker as “one of the most intriguing of the new crop of Asian-American composers.” His vibrant and inventive musical voice draws equal inspiration from Chinese folk, Western avant-garde, rock, and jazz to create a seamless, organic integration using a compositional technique he calls “dimensionalism.”
