SEREBRIER Symphony No 1, Violin Concerto ‘Winter’, Double Bass Concerto ‘Nueve’ with narration, Music for an Imaginary Film
Philippe Quint, violin • Gary Karr, double bass • David Daly, jazz bass • Matt King, Sacha Johnson, percussion •  Duncan Riddell, violin • Ellen Marsden, English horn • Simon Callow, narrator • Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra & Chorus • José Serebrier, conductor

‘When Naxos suggested making a new recording of my music, the idea was to give a full panoply and to emphasize the changes in style that occurred over time, from the very early First Symphony, through the experimental years (while working with George Szell in Cleveland as the orchestra’s Composer-in-Residence), the lighter side with two short concert tangos, and finally a score for a film that did not get made,” notes acclaimed composer-conductor José Serebrier. “In my music, while the style changed in the 1960s and 1970s, the ‘message’ remained the same. The lyrical line, the atmosphere, and a certain Slavic undertone are there in all these works.’

Naxos Deutschland Hörtipp August 2010

CHOPIN Klavierkonzert Nr. 1, Fantasie auf Polnische Weisen Op 13, Rondo à la Krakowiak
Eldar Nebolsin, klavier • Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra
Antoni Wit, dirigent

Select Music & Video Distribution Ltd (UK)

Select Music & Video Distribution Ltd. was founded in 1991 in order to distribute and market the Naxos and Marco Polo labels in the UK. Since then it has steadily increased the scale of its operations and taken on the distribution of many other classical labels, including Hyperion, Chandos, BIS, CPO, Ondine, Collegium, Opera Rara, Onyx, Coro and Gimell. By the time the company reached its 10th birthday it had established itself as by far the largest and most successful independent classical distributor in the UK. Over the past year the company has continued to forge ahead whilst other distributors cut back. Perhaps the most prominent recent development has been the growth of the DVD market, an area where Select has taken a lead with the handling of the Arthaus, BBC / Opus Arte and TDK labels.

CD of the Month

CHOPIN Piano Concerto No 1, Fantasy on Polish Airs Op 13, Rondo à la Krakowiak
Eldar Nebolsin, piano • Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra • Antoni Wit, conductor

Chopin’s youthful Piano Concerto No. 1 is dominated by the brilliant piano part that the teenage performer-composer wrote to showcase his extraordinary virtuosity. Its ravishing Romanza (‘reviving in one’s soul beautiful memories’, as the composer described it) is framed by an opening movement rich in dramatic lyricism and a vivacious Rondo. The Fantasy on Polish Airs, Op. 13 and the Rondo à la Krakowiak are similarly vehicles for Romantic reverie and bravura which pay tribute to the music of his homeland. Eldar Nebolsin’s recording of Liszt’s piano concertos (8.570517) was ranked among the finest” by Gramophone. Naxos’s new recording of Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto will be released on 8.572336 in October 2010.
