Instrumental music from the end of the later 18th century has attracted increasing attention in the last twenty years. The fact that Mozart and Haydn, the two central figures of the period, wrote relatively little for wind instruments is in itself a good enough reason to show more interest in works by their contemporaries. Among these must be included François Devienne, a most fascinating figure who is referred to as the French Mozart because of the affinity in style between the two composers, evident not least in Devienne's twelve flute concertos. This release is the final volume in Patrick Gallois' survey of these works.

DEVIENNE, F.: Flute Concertos, Vol. 3 - Nos. 9-12
François DEVIENNE (1759–1803)
Flute Concertos Nos. 9-12

François Devienne performed as an orchestral bassoonist and flautist but rose to fame as an operatic composer. His greatest achievement, however, lies in his sequence of Flute Concertos, of which this is the final volume. Despite his failing health, the four works on this recording demonstrate the hallmark combination of melodic elegance and graceful virtuosity that characterises Devienne’s flute concertos, and are among the most attractive of their time. Concerto No. 10 is one of his masterpieces, distinguished equally by the beauty of its thematic material and its confident, cohesive musical structure.

DEVIENNE, F.: Flute Concertos, Vol. 2 - Nos. 5-8
P. Gallois, Swedish Chamber Orchestra

“Patrick Gallois is at his most impressive in these passages: he does tongue-twisting display with formidable clarity. As both soloist and director, he benefits from the clear, vibrato-light playing of the (modern-instrument) Swedish Chamber Orchestra.”
