For many music lovers, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Mariss Jansons rank among the very best in the world—just one reason why, eight years ago, the radio station launched the CD label BR-KLASSIK. Since then, more than 100 recordings by the Chor and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks as well as by the Munich Rundfunkorchester have been released—and many have won international awards. The label is now celebrating Mariss Jansons’ 75th birthday with a series of outstanding recordings in a special 5-CD box, collectively providing an impressive portrait of the Maestro.

ZEMLINSKY, A.: Eine Florentinische Tragödie
Brunner • Koch • Reid • ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra • de Billy
Capriccio C5325

Oscar Wilde began his play A Florentine Tragedy in 1893, but it was destined to remain a fragment when the author was subsequently arrested for sexual misconduct. Yet the material was in the air, so to speak, and Alexander von Zemlinsky, possibly mindful of Richard Strauss’ setting of Wilde’s Salomé, eventually converted A Florentine Tragedy into a one-act opera, and became well-received. Alban Berg admired the work so much that musical parallels to the Florentine Tragedy can be found in his opera Wozzeck, which premiered eight years later.

Ich blick’ in mein Herz und ich blick’ in die Welt – SCHUMANN, R. • WOLF, H. • BRAHMS, J. • BRUCKNER, A.
Bästlein • Mouissi

The German author Emmanuel Geibel (18151884) enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime; his support for a strong and aggressive Prussia uttered in his poetry as well contributed to the end of the reception of his texts at the latest in 1919, after the German hegemonic demands had led to World War I. Until then, however many of his poems were set to music by many composers. Bass baritone Ulf Bästlein and Sascha El Mouissi, piano, feature on this album, dedicated to the work of Geibel.

SATIE, E.: Complete Piano Works, Vol. 2 (New Salabert Edition)
Nicolas Horvath
Grand Piano GP762

This is the second volume of a momentous new recording of Erik Satie’s complete solo piano music using Satie scholar Robert Orledge’s new and entirely revised Salabert Edition. Composed as incidental music to the pastoral drama set in Chaldea in 3000 BC by French novelist Josephine Péladan, Le Fils des étoiles is one of Satie’s longest scores and rarely heard in its entirety. Fête donnée par des chevaliers normands en l’honneur d’une jeune demoiselle (XIe siècle) invokes the spirit of medieval plainsong. This landmark edition is played on Cosima Wagner’s own 1881 Erard piano, Satie’s instrument maker of choice.

DEBUSSY, C.: Préludes • Children’s Corner
Paavali Jumppanen
Ondine ODE1304-2D

Debussy’s 24 Piano Préludes were published in two sets in 1910 and 1913. These miniatures are varied in character and style, and include, among others, references to literature, poetry, nature, the Mediterranean landscape and the events in Paris during Debussy’s lifetime. The six pieces forming the cycle Children’s Corner (1908) evoke adult recollections of childhood. The set bears a dedication to Debussy’s daughter Chouchou and includes some of Debussy’s most well-known piano pieces, including The Snow is Dancing and Golliwogg’s Cakewalk. A dedicated performer of French music, Paavali Jumppanen often performs the large cycles of Debussy’s late period, namely the Préludes and the Études.

Sono Luminus

Bruce Levingston
Sono Luminus DSL-92218

Bruce Levingston is one of today’s celebrated figures in contemporary classical music. The New Yorker has called him “a force for new music” with “a gift for innovative and glamorous programming.” It seemed fitting for Levingston to program these three inspired, and inspiring, composers together—James Matheson, Robert Schumann, and David Bruce. Their works, old and new, represent aural windows through which their extraordinary visions may be heard, sensed and felt.

SWR Classic

Claudio Arrau
SWR Classic SWR19054CD

This is a first release of the recitals from 1954, 1960 in Ludwigsburg and a rerelease of the recital from 1963 in Schwetzingen. Where other famous pianists play the piano for excitement, power or display, Arrau played to probe, to divine, to interpret. Sir Neville Cardus of the Guardian, explained Arrau vividly: “Arrau is the complete pianist. He can revel in the keyboard for its own pianistic sake, representing to us the instrument’s range and power, but he can also go beyond piano playing as we are led by his art to the secret chambers of the creative imagination.”

VANDINI, A.: Cello Sonatas Nos. 1-6
Bologna Baroque
Tactus TC692202

In his “Journey to Italy” Charles Burney described how Vandini “played in such a way that he made his instrument speak”. He did not leave a great deal of works, those that came to us unequivocally testify that Father Vandini becomes by right part of that great Bolognese cello school together with Gabbrielli, Franceschini, Vitali and Degli Antoni. Antonio Mostacci, accompanied by the Bologna Baroque Ensemble, for the solo part plays a 5-string piccolo cello by the Testore school, 1750 ca.

BelAir Classiques BAC517 [BD] | BAC217 [DVD]

Recorded at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in June 2004, this Le Nozze di Figaro was unanimously acclaimed by public and critics alike as a Mozart opera landmark. Director Jean-Louis Martinoty brings an elegantly intelligent narrative sense to an interpretation in which the protagonists, against a backdrop of magnificent canvases of 18th-century inspiration, are dressed by Sylvie de Segonzac in a palette in which every shade is perfect. Hans Schavernoch’s set suggests an elitist society that is coming apart at the seams. René Jacobs’s conducting of Concerto Köln is meticulous and perfectly balanced, offering a ravishing use of tonal colour and orchestral dynamics.

Didyk • Markov • Stoyanov • Dutch National Opera Chorus • Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra • Jansons
C Major 744004 [BD] | 743908 [DVD]

Former Music Director Mariss Jansons returns to Amsterdam to conduct Pique Dame at the Dutch National Opera with “his” Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He encounters a noteworthy cast and under his baton the orchestra sounds “brilliant and splendid” (Der Tagesspiegel). Renowned director Stefan Herheim staged Tchaikovsky’s much-loved opera about a young man who, for the prospect of earthly wealth, gambles away his chance for love and happiness. “The Latvian maestro, the intriguingly performing orchestra, the smartly-chosen soloists, and director Stefan Herheim have succeeded in staging an extraordinary production” (Die Presse).

Two unforgettable evenings showcase the artistry of Renée Fleming alongside Christian Thielemann’s mastery of the Austro-German Romantic idiom, as the Salzburg Festival honours one of its founding fathers, Richard Strauss, and the Staatskapelle Dresden draws on the deep well of its living Bruckner tradition. Filmed in High Definition and recorded in true Surround Sound. “Thielemann, whose reading is satisfyingly spacious, reveals the work’s structural mastery in intermingling and transforming its many themes. The excellent video director Michael Beyer expertly lays out the orchestra in front of us, following the music sensibly so that we can relish Strauss’s detailed scoring…[Fleming] sings gloriously and the result is ravishing” (Gramophone).
