DVOŘÁK, A.: Rhapsodies, Opp. 14 and 45
Pilsen Philharmonic Orchestra, Brauner
ArcoDiva UP0171-2

Composed and premiered in 1878-79, the first two of Antonín Dvořák’s 3 Slavonic Rhapsodies, Op.45 were the works he conducted at his first independent concert in late 1878, formally introducing himself to the Czech public in Prague. Taken together with the earlier Rhapsody in A minor, Op.14, these not often recorded works – all the rhapsodies the composer penned are replete with the melodic invention and colorful orchestration – are to be found on his new ArcoDiva CD in performances by the Pilsen Philharmonic and their main guest conductor Tomás Brauner.

Considered as a work of one of the greatest symphonic composers of the Classic‐Romantic era, Bruckner’s unfinished Symphony No. 9 is brought to an end, in a poignant manner. Once more the essential elements of Bruckner’s symphonic style are present; the technical standard, the intensity of sound, and the enormous richness of expression are in this singular work brought to an unsurpassed niveau.

It is a demanding work for musicians, singers and the production team. In his stage production, the Belgian Guy, Cassiers, conveys the aesthetic quality and musical brilliance of this gesamtkunstwerk in dazzling imagery. The challenges of the music and dramatic performance are admirably mastered by renowned singers including René Pape, Waltraud Meier, Lance Ryan, Nina Stemme, Simon O’Neill, Iréne Theorin and many others.
