MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection"
Tynan, Wyn-Rogers, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Schwarz
Artek AR-0061-2

In 1888, Gustav Mahler’s tone-poem called Totenfeier (Funeral Rites) became the foundation for and the first movement of what would later be his Symphony No. 2. As the complexity of this work grew, it would eventually be known as the “Resurrection” Symphony, after the “moment of clarity” and inspiration he experienced at the funeral of Hans von Bulow, his friend and conducting mentor. This massive musical composition containing five movements uses a full chorus, soprano and alto soloists, and a featured alto solo voice essential to the work’s fourth movement. Internationally renowned conductor Gerard Schwarz leads the Royal Philharmonic in this live performance of Mahler’s “Resurrection” that features soprano Ailish Tynan and mezzo-soprano Catherine Wyn-Rogers.

Vocal Recital: Hvorostovsky, Dmitri - PAKHMUTOVA, A. /
BLANTER, M.I. / PETROV, A.P. / KOLMANOVSKY, E. / DOLUKHANIAN, A. (Wait for Me)

Hvorostovsky, Ministry of Internal Affairs Chorus, Style of Five, Moscow Novaya Opera Orchestra, Orbelian
Delos DE3475

A nostalgia-inspiring survey drawn from the extensive body of popular Russian WWII-era songs, this album is the sequel to two all-time favorite Delos titles: Where Are You, My Brothers and Moscow Nights. These sentimental, melancholic, and passionate songs have a strong global appeal, expressing as they do the universal themes and feelings common to soldiers the world over. Operatic superstar baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky delivers these musical mainstays of Russian culture with relaxed classical technique and the kind of refined, yet soulful and deeply affecting emotional impact that have made his concerts of these pieces wildly popular all across Russia and around the world. Constantine Orbelian leads the superb Novaya Opera Orchestra and the renowned Ministry of Internal Affairs Chorus – with flavorful idiomatic touches from the unique Style of Five Ensemble of authentic Russian folk instruments.

Schimpf
Oehms Classics OC1820

In the summer of 2011, Alexander Schimpf became the first German to win one of the world’s most renowned piano competitions: the Cleveland International Piano Competition. Since then, the doors to all concert halls have been open to him, especially on the North American continent, as well in Germany. He follows up his Oehms Classics debut (OC867) that featured Ravel, Scriabin and Schubert with this release of solo piano works by Brahms (Op. 119), Debussy (Images, Book II) and Beethoven’s 32nd and last sonata for solo piano in C minor, Op. 111.

Ondine

ZEMLINSKY, A.: Seejungfrau (Die) / Sinfonietta
Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Storgårds
Ondine ODE1237-5

The Helsinki Philharmonic, under its chief conductor John Storgårds, offers a fascinating program of two major orchestral works by Alexander Zemlinsky (1871–1942) in world premiere recordings. 1902’s Die Seejungfrau (Mermaid) is a lush, powerful 3-movement symphonic “fantasy”. Before the work’s premiere in 1905 Zemlinsky had already made radical cuts to it, later withdrawing the score and never mentioning the work in his catalogue; it was not heard again until 1984. This release is the first recording of a new (2013) critical version based on the original score. Written and premiered in Prague in 1935, The Sinfonietta, Op. 34 is a fascinating example of Zemlinsky’s late orchestral writing and stylistic evolution. This recording is of a new (2013) version for chamber orchestra by Austrian composer Roland Freisitzer (b. 1973).

Opus Arte

STEFFANI, A.: Niobe, regina di Tebe [Opera]
Davies, Forsythe, Galou, Gens, Laszczkowski, Mead, Miles, Odinius, Taddia, Balthasar-Neumann Ensemble, Hengelbrock
Opus Arte OACD9008D

A world-famous court composer during his lifetime, Agostino Steffani (1654-1728) exercised a significant influence on the likes of Handel, J.S. Bach and Telemann; his music nevertheless falling into neglect after his death. Thanks to conductor and Baroque specialist Thomas Hengelbrock, Steffani’s musically rich and emotionally intense fifth opera Niobe, regina di Tebe, revived in 2008, is heard here in The Royal Opera’s acclaimed 2010 production. With a ‘delectable’ and ‘seductive’ performance from Véronique Gens as the proud queen punished for defying the gods, supported by male soprano Jacek Laszczkowski, who ‘thrills with his astonishing power at the top of the voice ... [giving] an exciting approximation of what the castrato could do’ (Independent), this recording ushers Steffani’s forgotten masterpiece to the wider public.

Ashkenazy
Orlando Records OR0012

Clarinetist Dimitri Ashkenazy has compiled a very personal selection of solo pieces for clarinet that have been important to him in one way or another. He envisaged “a lamp with soft light, a music stand, my open clarinet case and other things that are connected to the solitude of practice sessions and the sometime loneliness associated with the striving for excellence”. Born in 1969 in New York, Dimitri Ashkenazy began playing the piano at age six before switching to the clarinet. Since completing his studies, he has gone on to perform widely, both as soloist and chamber musician.

Esfahani, Petri
OUR Recordings 6.220611

For rising star harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and recorder queen Michala Petri, the adversity surrounding the near-cancellation of the 13th International Pharos Chamber Music Festival helped fuel a most compelling performance (“A match made in heaven” - Norman Lebrecht). So successful was their collaboration, they immediately set about planning recordings and recitals. Focusing on 20th century repertoire – much of it composed especially for Michala – this release includes a newly commissioned work from Daniel Kidane and CD premieres of works by Vagn Holmboe and Henning Christiansen.

Paladino Music

MOZART, W.A.: Chamber Music (Mozart (re)inventions)
Lamb, Rummel (Ensemble Paladino)
Paladino Music PMR0050

“Mozart (re)inventions” is Ensemble Paladino’s continued reimagining and exploration of classical works of great composers. The famous duos for violin and viola in a new transcription for flute and cello are the main works of Eric Lamb (“...agility and a buttery tone.” - New York Times) and Martin Rummel (tempting to present Rummel as the latest candidate for “most distinguished Viennese cellist of today.” - American Record Guide). Other gems include some tunes from the “Magic Flute” and, of course, Mozart’s very first piano piece, the Menuet K1.

Sono Luminus

Piano Recital: Besalyan, Raffi - RACHMANINOV, S. /
BABADJANIAN, A.H. (The Return)

Besalyan
Sono Luminus DSL-92187

Here Raffi Besalyan performs music dominated by thoughts of home. Rachmaninoff’s “B-Minor Prelude”, inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s painting ‘The Return’, was a constant companion in his exile, a favorite for his own recitals and a reminder of his years in Russia. Based in Moscow for much of his adult life, Arno Babajanian (1921-83) looked back to his native Armenia in music that mixed Rachmaninov and Chopinesque influences and Armenian folk idioms with the virtuosic pianism of the Russian school. Mr. Besalyan, an Armenian pianist based in the US, brings their music together in a program infused with warm memories, evocations of far off places, and reminders of earlier times.

Tactus

COLONNA, G.P.: Absalone [Oratorio]
Allegrezza, Antonaz, Bertuzzi, Biscuola, Borgioni, Ensemble Les Nations, Baldassari
Tactus TC630302

Among the thirteen oratorios by Giovanni Paolo Colonna, more than half are connected, by origin or tradition, to the court of Francesco II d’Este. Although in the early modern period the sacredness of monarchy was indisputable, it cannot be taken for granted that an oratorio was offered to a monarch in order to praise him unconditionally. Oratorios were often an instrument of admonition. This aspect is fully expressed in L’Assalonne, concerning familial and power entanglements between father and son.

ABBADO, Claudio: MOZART, W.A.: Concert Arias / Symphony No. 35 / Haffner / BEETHOVEN, L. van: Incidental Music to Egmont
Banse, Ganz, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, Schäfer, Abbado
Accentus Music ACC-10244 [Blu-ray] | ACC-20244 [DVD]

All are equal before the work, before the mysteries of a score; this was Claudio Abbado’s heart-felt conviction. For him, the willingness to be open to one another and to the independent life of musical processes was the only prerequisite for making music. In the live performances documented here for the first time on DVD and Blu-ray disc, Abbado could be sure of the devotion of these world-class artists: the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, the sopranos Christine Schäfer and Juliane Banse, as well as actor Bruno Ganz, sharing his credo of “listening togetherness”. This intimate portrait follows Kylian as he travels to Prague for the first time since the change of government and to rehearsals in Stuttgart, where he began his career as a dancer with John Cranko and choreographed his first ballet. Many extracts from Kylian’s ballets are included, illustrating the breadth and diversity of his work to date, archive film that should prove fascinating, and interviews with colleagues.

TRIFONOV, Daniil: The Magics of Music (Documentary) /
The Castelfranco Veneto Recital

Trifonov
Christopher Nupen Films A19CND [DVD]

These two films by Christopher Nupen, four-time winner of the Documentary DVD of the Year Award, offer an intimate view of the artist Daniil Trifonov and his hardly-believable gifts that are currently astonishing the world. Mr. Trifonov, winner of both the Tchaikovsky and Rubinstein competitions at age 20, talks revealingly about his musical concerns but his modesty prevents him from saying anything at all about his extraordinary technique. “I am just playing the piano.” he says. The films contain a number of performances shot live on stage with cameras unusually close to the artist which adds considerably to the power of its images. They present him in conversations in which he demonstrates his earnestness, exceptional modesty and high intelligence.

In the portrait film, Trifonov plays music by Chopin, Ravel and Trifonov himself: part of his First Piano Concerto, filmed at its world premiere performance at the Cleveland Institute, in the US, in April 2014. In the performance film he plays music by Chopin, Scriabin, Johann Strauss (arr. Trifonov) and Rachmaninov in the elegant Teatro Accademico in Castelfranco Veneto, near Venice in Italy.

ROSSINI, G.: Semiramide (Vlaamse Opera Gent, 2011)
Papatanasiu, Hallenberg, Wagner, McPherson, Bakan, Gearhart, Dekeyser, Santamaria, Vlaamse Opera Ghent Chorus, Vlaamse Opera Ghent Symphony Orchestra, Zedda
Dynamic DYN-55674 [Blu-ray] | DYN-33674 [DVD]

The composition of Semiramide took approximately four months, which is an unusually long span for Rossini. The premiere took place on the 3rd of February of 1823. The opera’s libretto is based on Voltaire’s drama Sémiramis, written by the French philosopher and scholar in 1748. Semiramide contains, like all masterpieces, traditional elements alongside innovative ones. The role of Semiramide calls for a singer with qualities both of dramatic and coloratura soprano; bel canto agility is, in any case, required of all the main interpreters of this opera. This is a “huge” opera from all points of view. It summarizes and completes Rossini’s serious arc, and is paradigmatic of all that would follow.

STRAVINSKY, I.: L'oiseau de feu (The Firebird)
Hodgkinson, Antonijevic, Rimsay, Harrington, Bertram, Kirov Orchestra, Gergiev
EuroArts 2061084 [Blu-ray] | 2061088 [DVD]

The Firebird is an exciting one-hour dance special based on the mystical Russian folk tale of enchantment and love, set to Stravinsky’s fantastical ballet score. This adaption of James Kudelka’s masterpiece for the stage combines classical ballet with magical visual effects. Mr. Kudelka’s choreography is by turns elegant, virtuosic but always passionate and musically evocative. The Firebird features the top dancers from the internationally renowned National Ballet of Canada, including the great Greta Hodgkinson (nominated for the Prix Benois de la Danse in 2000) as the main role, Aleksandar Antonijevic as Prince Ivan, Rebekah Rimsay as Princess Vasilisa, and the unforgettable Rex Harrington as Kastchei the Demon. Conductor Valery Gergiev leads The Kirov Orchestra in the performance of the music.

DONIZETTI, G.: Favorite (La) (Theatre du Capitole, 2015)
Aldrich, Shi, Tezier, Furlanetto, Gabriel, Souquet, Ahn, Orchestra and Chorus Of The Teatre Du Capitole, Allemandi
Opus Arte OABD7165D [Blu-ray] | OA1166D [DVD]

One of the composer’s most beguiling scores, La Favorite is Gaetano Donizetti’s La favorita in its original French form; a tale of love and war that represents a glorious mix of Italian bel canto and 19th century grand opéra. Vincent Boussard’s arresting Toulouse production does full justice to this newly renewed masterpiece. Three international principals take on the work’s demanding roles: Chinese tenor Yijie Shi is a ‘revelation’ (La Dépêche) as Fernand, the rich-toned, authoritative French baritone Ludovic Tézier as King Alphonse XI and lauded American mezzo Kate Aldrich – ‘the Carmen of this generation’ (San Francisco Sentinel) – plumbing the emotional depths of Léonor’s music. Conductor and bel canto specialist Antonello Allemandi adds to the passionate proceedings onstage.
