MENDELSSOHN, Felix: Elijah (Elias)
Braun, Oliemans, Petersen, Schmitt, Berlin Akademie für Alte Musik,
RIAS Chamber Chorus, Rademann

Accentus Music ACC-30356

“Never was there a more complete triumph – never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art.” This was the response of the critic in the London Times to the wildly successful premiere of Felix Mendelssohn’s Elias in 1846.

Hans-Christoph Rademann began his tenure as Principal Conductor of the RIAS Chamber Choir with this groundbreaking oratorio. After eight productive and successful years, his final concert in July 2015 also featured the work. It was a “Farewell Performance with Furor” (Der Tagesspiegel), not least because of the impressive performers involved: the RIAS Chamber Choir, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and the soloists Marlis Petersen, Lioba Braun, Maximilian Schmitt, and Thomas Oliemans.

Hans-Christoph Rademann is one of the world’s most sought-after choral conductors, a specialist in the sound of choral ensembles. From 2007 to 2015, he expanded the reputation and repertoire of the RIAS Chamber Choir, helping the group to achieve a remarkable spiritual and emotional identification with the subject matter of the works it performed.

HANDEL, G.F.: Rodelinda [Opera]
Fagioli, Fanale, Ganassi, Giovannini, Liso, Myshketa, Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia, Fasolis
Dynamic CDS7724

As with the majority of Handel’s stage works, Rodelinda is composed in a purely Italian style.

The libretto was adapted by Nicola Haym from a previous version by Antonio Salvi. In line with the norms for Italian opera, it consists of solo da capo arias interspersed with secco recitatives and, occasionally, with accompanied ones.

The undoubted protagonist of the opera is Rodelinda, for whom the composer wrote eight of the original score's thirty-two numbers, as well as the duet with Bertarido. Rodelinda’s characterisation is a masterpiece of psychological and musical insight, beginning with the entrance aria, Ho perduto il caro sposo. This is a doleful piece, rich in expressive chromaticism and almost completely devoid of coloratura passages, in which the Lombard queen appears prey to the deepest dejection.

No less brilliant and persuasive is the musical characterisation of the exiled King Bertarido, whose courage is, unusually, extolled more in recitatives than in arias. Bertarido is entrusted with the beautiful accompanied recitative in Act One, Pompe vane di morte, one the finest and most moving passages of the entire opera, which introduces the melancholy aria Dove sei, amato bene.

BRITTEN, V.: Songs from the Chinese /
Folk Song Arrangements, Vol. 6, "England" /
Nocturnal after John Dowland

Fuch, Gulyás
Proprius PRSACD2075

After George Gulyás's recent records including the critically acclaimed Complete Lute Works for Guitar on Proprius / Naxos, here is a new CD entirely dedicated to music by Benjamin Britten. It contains all the works in which the guitar is included, and performed together with the mezzo-soprano Ivonne Fuchs.

The album also presents a solo piece, the Nocturnal Op. 70, one of the guitar literature's most important works. Based on John Dowland’s Come heavy Sleep, the piece reflects the various stages of insomnia and hints at how sleep or death finally enters as a liberator.

In Songs from the Chinese Op. 58, we meet a British brooding over the aging process and where we are thrown from melancholy to the restlessness that turns up in Dance song, a wild dance where the unicorn symbolizes lost innocence, one of Britten's favorite themes. Folksong Arrangements treats traditional themes such as the sailor, love, and moral themes, as in The Shooting of his Dear, where a young man shoots his sweetheart by accident during the hunt after mistaking her for a swan.

HOLST, G.: Ken Russell's View of the Planets
Philadelphia Orchestra, Ormandy
Arthaus Musik 109169 [Blu-ray] | 109168 [DVD]

The Planets by Gustav Holst is one of the best-loved 20th-century pieces by a British composer. Ken Russell has taken a brilliant performance of this work, with Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, and illustrated The Planets with passages from a mass of documentary material.

Russell’s work in film and television has been dazzling and controversial, though often full of charm and insights. His feature film credits include The Music Lovers, Women in Love, Mahler, The Devils, Savage Messiah, Lisztomania, Valentino and Tommy.

In this film from 1983, he presents his visual interpretation of Holst’s music. Written in seven movements, each describes the character of a planet: Mars – forceful and assertive; Venus – love of all things beautiful; Mercury – eloquent; Jupiter – buoyant and hopeful; Saturn – enduring; Uranus – eccentric and unexpected; and Neptune – subtle and mysterious.

GOUNOD, C.-F.: Faust
Abdrazakov, Castronovo, Kemoklidze, Korbey, Ladjuk, Lungu, Orecchia, Torino Teatro Regio Chorus and Orchestra, Noseda
C Major 735204 [Blu-ray] | 735108 [DVD]

Premiered in Paris in 1859, Gounod’s Faust was an instant success and remains one of the most popular of all French operas today. Its libretto was based on Michel Carré’s adaptation of his own stage play Faust et Marguerite, which in turn was loosely fashioned after Goethe’s two-part tragedy. By placing a giant black ring center-stage that casts an ominous shadow over the singers and dominates the action, director, set and costume designer Stefano Poda has moved the storyline of the restless searcher Faust to an abstract, seemingly futuristic hall. Thereby, ensuring that the most fascinating stage moments are not due only to sophisticated lighting. Thanks to the excellent and enthusiastic cast, Poda deftly guides the opera to triumph.

Charles Castronovo in the title role is especially convincing with his brilliant acting and mellifluous singing. Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov – a regular in all major opera houses around the world – stars as the demonic Méphistophélès. Lastly, we see Moldovan soprano Irina Lungu as the innocent young girl Marguerite who demonstrates her ability with crystal-clear timbre.

VERDI, G.: Giovanna d'Arco
Borras, Cervellera, Cordaro, Kim, Pratt, Bari Teatro Petruzzelli Chorus, Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia, Frizza
Dynamic DYN-37676 [DVD]

Giovanna d’Arco, Verdi's seventh opera, was premièred at La Scala in Milan on 15th February, 1845. It was written between the composition of I Due Foscari (November 1844) and Alzira (August 1845), a period when Verdi was already enjoying popularity as a recognised heir to Bellini and Donizetti. After the success of Nabucco, which had launched him on the Italian operatic scene, the Venetian triumph of Ernani cemented Verdi's reputation as a composer of international stature, both at home and abroad.

The composition of Giovanna d’Arco is not clearly documented in Verdi's letters, but what we do know is that he wrote it in just four months, using a libretto by Temistocle Solera based on Friedrich Schiller’s five-act romantic tragedy Die Jungfrau von Orléans.

Giovanna d’Arco contains a wealth of beautiful music that displays Verdi’s infallible theatrical sense and perfect dramatic timing, both hallmarks of his style.
