FRANÇAIX, J.: Double Piano Concerto /
POULENC, F.: Concerto for 2 Pianos

M. Bard, R. Bard, Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic Orchestra, Matiakh
Capriccio C5237

In his musical aesthetics, Jean Françaix was close to the ‘Groupe des six’ from the outset, and in the connection between cheerfulness and elegance so typical of him to Poulenc in particular. This applies especially to 1965s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra, a work he and his daughter premiered.

GOMÓŁKA, M.: Melodie na psałterz polski
(Audite, Gentes! - Psalms of the Golden Age)

Castro, Ceremużyńska, Reyes
CD Accord CDAccordACD214

Mikolaj Gomolka’s Melodies for the Polish Psalter, a collection of 150 four-voice compositions intended as a musical setting for Jan Kochanowski’s poetic Book of Psalms translation, ranks among Polish culture’s most significant works. Seemingly simple in style, Gomolka’s Melodies are a true compendium of various musical forms. The musical score of each psalm was really a proposal, opening up the possibility for many different interpretations.

LUTZ, M.: Choral Music (There Is a Spell Upon Your Lips)
Hojgaard Andersen, Jensen, Reumert, Stadnicki, Termansen, Weinschenk, Copenhagen Chamber Choir Camerata, Nagashima Toft
Dacapo 8.224724

Martin Lutz (b. 1974) is an artist of bold strokes in both style and genre, not only as the anchor of his various jazz and crossover-like ensembles, but also as the originator of music for children, music for sport and athletics and as a classical composer and arranger. While his intimate Stabat Mater (2007) and reflective Two Marian Motets are musical settings of much-loved religious poetry, the accompanying works are devoted to earthly love in its most spellbinding form. Presented for the first time on CD, the choral compositions of Martin Lutz show the otherwise jazz-oriented composer from a more classical side.

VERDI, G.: Simon Boccanegra [Opera]
Abdrazakov, Alcauskis, Caria, Frittoli, Hvorostovsky, Secco, Sidlauskaite, Smoriginas, Kaunas State Choir, Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra, Orbelian
Delos DE3457

This star-studded current release of Giuseppi Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra is Delos label’s first-ever full-length Italian opera recording. It promises quite the splash among today’s opera fans. As Verdi was entering his glorious “late period” (Otello and Falstaff) he wrote and re-worked much of Simon Boccanegra, a work he first tackled in 1857. The opera emerged in 1881 as a powerful masterpiece, although one that has been unfairly neglected, in comparison with Verdi’s other operatic masterworks.

The glamorous title star Dmitri Hvorostovsky – considered by many as the world’s greatest Verdi baritone – here realizes his chance to record what he calls “ of the most complex, deepest characters in the whole baritone repertoire.” Joining Hvorostovsky in this studio recording are the kinds of all-star colleagues he deserves: soprano Barbara Frittoli as Amelia, tenor Stefano Secco as Gabriele, bass Ildar Abdrazakov as Fiesco and baritone Marco Caria as Paolo.

(20th-Century Women Composers)

Creco, Hauri, Tschopp, Beach, Windsor, Trio des Alpes
Dynamic CDS7717

Among other things, the Italian Swiss ensemble Trio des Alpes’ wish is to revive unjustly neglected music works. Women Composers is one such project in which the trio wishes to spread the works of 20th century women composers, as well as commission new pieces by women composers. This new Dynamic release is dedicated to three such women composers – Rebecca Clarke, Amy Beach and Lili Boulanger – and their too rarely heard works. These works for flute embody the late-Romanticism and early-Modernism ethos. British-Italian soprano Lorna Windsor, very active in contemporary music circles, is heard in Ms. Beach opus.

MOZART, W.A.: Opera Arias (Castrato Arias)
Sabadus, Recreation - Graz Grosses Orchester, Hofstetter
Oehms Classics OC1814

With Johann Adolph Hasse's Reloaded (OC830), Valer Sabadus became the shooting star amongst countertenors. In December 2013, he appeared in Mozart roles for the Styriarte. The Salzburg master wrote them for some of the greatest castrati of his time: Rauzzini, Consoli, Bedini. The young interpreter must therefore sing up into the heights of the soprano range; he succeeds in this wonderfully, as he also does in the exploration of profound feelings. With his mentor Michael Hofstetter on the podium, his flawlessly beautiful singing is supported by the orchestra‘s pulsing Mozartian vitality.

SIBELIUS, J.: Lemminkäinen Suite - Pohjola's Daughter
Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Lintu
Ondine ODE1262-5

With 2015 marking his 150th birthday, conductor Hannu Lintu and the Finnish Radio Symphony offer a full program of classic orchestral works by Jean Sibelius, including the large and fascinating orchestral work in four movements based on the Finnish Kalevala epic, Lemminkäinen. Written prior to his First Symphony, it is also noteworthy that Lemminkäinen lacks nothing of a symphony, and includes some of his boldest and most dramatic scoring. Pohjola’s Daughter (Pohjolan tytar), completed in 1906, is among Sibelius’ final orchestral pieces directly linked to the Kalevala epic.

PORFIRI, P.: Chamber Cantatas for Solo Voice
Carmignani, Lucciarini, Laboratorio Armonico
Tactus TC651601

This CD brings to light a completely forgotten composer, the priest Pietro Porfiri from Marche of whom little is known. The works on this album are taken from a 1692 self-published collection of secular cantatas, just at the time when this kind of music was widespread by publishers all over Europe, particularly Italy. The soprano Pamela Lucciarini and countertenor Alessandro Carmignani bring to light an unexpected musical writing in search of innovative solutions extremely audacious for its time. Laboratorio Armonico, providing basso continuo, features highly skilled early music artists.

Alieva, Masters of Choral Singing, Russian National Orchestra, Orbelian
Delos DV7008 [Blu-ray] | DV7007 [DVD]

Rising superstar soprano Dinara Alieva – since 2010 a Bolshoi Opera mainstay – has been entrancing opera and concert audiences throughout Europe and elsewhere, appearing to consistent acclaim in major roles at many of the world’s top houses. This live concert video – following her highly successful prior CD release on Delos, Pace mio Dio (DE3462) – showcases not only her voluptuous voice, interpretive power and stylistic versatility ... but also (thanks to the visual element) her stunning glamour and charismatic stage presence. The varied and highly appealing program encompasses operatic favorites from such composers as Charpentier, Massenet and Cilea – as well as lighter fare from the Spanish Zarzuela and Viennese operetta traditions plus several beloved popular standards. Woven through the vocal program is a series of scintillating orchestral bonbons courtesy of conductor Constantine Orbelian (per Opera News, “...the singer’s dream collaborator”) leading the superb Russian National Orchestra and the vaunted Grand Choir, “Masters of Choral Singing.”

Argerich, Barenboim
EuroArts 2059994 [Blu-ray] | 2059998 [DVD]

Both hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, pianists Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim are not only fellow countrymen; as child prodigies they both began to give concerts in their youth, as soloists and with an orchestra, and both have gone on to establish long, distinguished global careers as virtuoso pianists in addition to branching out to other equally distinguished activities of considerable and noteworthy impact within and outside the classical music world, including but not limited to for either or both, conducting, competition jurists, festival founders and humanitarian causes.

In the musical realm, their particular, common interest in chamber music performance led these two musical eminences and ambassadors to concertize together, as seen here on EuroArts DVD/Blu-ray offering Piano Duos, featuring works by Mozart, Schubert and Stravinsky.
