Basel Symphony Orchestra

SCHUBERT, F.: Symphonies Nos. 2 and 6
Basel Symphony, D.R. Davies
Basel Symphony Orchestra SOB07

This CD release continues the Basel Symphony Orchestra’s ongoing Schubert series of all his symphonies. Designed for a ‘big audience’, Schubert’s symphonies during his lifetime were, at best, only performed in the semi-public rooms of the seminary and those of the amateur orchestra. Not until barely a month after his death in 1828 did the first truly representative symphony performance take place – for reasons unknown that of his Symphony No. 6.

DODERER, J.: Piano Trios Nos. 1-4
Vilos Trio
Capriccio C5220

Johanna Doderer studied composition in Graz with Beat Furrer (composition), later in Vienna with Klaus Peter Sattler (composition for film and media) and with Erich Urbanner (composition). Her current work ranges broadly from Chamber Music to orchestral work and to meanwhile 6 operas.

“…Doderer cares about content, not about cheap effect. As she perfectly masters her writing, she is able to prove convincingly in her very densely written score, that even today you can still create intense music by using sound models deriving from the late romantic period, and which can be combined in an ideal way with forms of, minimal music’…” (Die Presse)

Violin Recital: Lavrova, Dunja – ALBENIZ / DEBUSSY / DRIGO / FALLA, de / GERSHWIN / HALLFFTER (My Dusty Gramophone)
Lapshin, Lavrova
Solo Musica SM216

“…what I wanted to do is more or less go back in time to the days when the making of the records by the likes of Jascha Heifetz and David Oistrach was rather different to what it is now. Just like they did back then, I wanted to set up the microphones very close, to use almost no reverb at all, record as much as possible in full live takes, and - if possible, use vintage equipment.

Having the microphones so close up felt very unforgiving and recording numerous full live takes of the same pieces was tiring, but I must admit that the thing I particularly indulged in was using more portamento than it is usually done these days- because the repertoire I chose for the album and the way we recorded it actually encouraged it. And I think it makes for a more authentic experience, which is exactly what I wanted to recreate: a trip back in time.” – Dunja Lavrova

Sono Luminus

SCHUMANN, R.: String Quartets Nos. 1-3
Ying Quartet
Sono Luminus DSL-92184

Robert Schumann’s three string quartets were written within just a few fevered weeks in the summer of 1842. The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining brilliantly communicative performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music. Now in its second decade as a quartet, the Quartet has established itself as an ensemble of the highest musical qualifications in its tours across the United States and abroad.

VERDI, G.: Un giorno di regno [Opera]
Kiria, Roma Sinfonietta, Bonolis
Tactus TC812290

Among Verdi’s early productions, the comic opera Un giorno di regno had a particularly unlucky fate, written as it was after the success of his first opera, Oberto, but also during a time of unspeakable personal tragedy with the death of his two sons followed shortly by that of his wife. Its fiasco 1840 premiere is, however, a distant, forgotten memory; the opera is far from being the disaster it had been considered for many years. For this Tactus release, Gabriele Bonolis leads the Roma Sinfonietta and a singing cast featuring baritone Mikheil Kiria and soprano Alice Quintavalla.

VIERNE, L.: Piano Works (Complete)
O. Gardon
Timpani 2C2223

Featuring the re-release of the first recording of the complete piano works of the celebrated organist of Notre-Dame. The first complete recording of Louis Vierne’s piano works, performed by Olivier Gardon, appeared twenty years ago. It was at once acclaimed by the press, and rightly so: this is very great piano music played by a great pianist. Vierne borrowed from the Russians, from Schumann, from Fauré, but he stands out through his total commitment and an atmosphere approaching the tragic, a reflection of his own destiny. The detailed, intelligent and exhaustive text by Jean-Pierre Mazeirat, makes this double album a magisterial reference within Timpani’s Vierne collection.
