WAGNER, R.: Das Rheingold [Opera]
Baechle, Bruns, Dasch, Hagen, Halfvarson, Horn, Iranyi, Konieczny, Kulman, Pecoraro, Rose, Ulrich, Vogel, Volle, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Rattle
BR-Klassik 900133

Everything the conductor Sir Simon Rattle touches "turns to gold". Everything except for the music dramas of Richard Wagner, that is! It has often been asserted, albeit without good reason, that Rattle and Wagner do not go together. This has now been conclusively disproved by the third collaboration between Rattle and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, together with a team of the very best Wagner singers. This concert performance of Das Rheingold, the first opera in Wagner's mighty tetralogy "The Ring of the Nibelung", was performed in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz on April 24 and 25, 2015, and has now been brought out by BR KLASSIK on two CDs just a few months after the live event.

ADAMS, J.L.: Ilimaq
Adams, Kotche
Cantaloupe Music CA-21112

A true electro-acoustic recording that channels the energy, passion and precision of Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche, Ilimaq (which loosely translates from the native Alaskan Inupiaq language as “spirit journeys”) maps a vivid, phantasmagorical progression through cascades and firestorms of percussion, otherworldly ambient soundscapes, harmonic dissonance, melodic convergence and plenty more in the musical and sonic spaces between.

Grammy®-winning composer John Luther Adams composed this work for Glenn Kotche after they met duting Wilco’s 2008 tour. Ilimaq was recently performed live by Kotche at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall in February as part of the Ecstatic Music Festival.

KORNGOLD, E.W.: Complete Lieder
Jarnot, Mees, Pieczonka
Capriccio C5252

As one of the last exponents of the Austro-Germanic lied tradition which lasted almost centuries, Erich Wolfgang Korngold occupies a special place in this tradition, and his exceptional contributions are finally being rediscovered. This recording presents the totality of Korngold’s lied compositions including many being released for the first time. From his childhood composition days to his final lied in tribute to the city of his youth, Vienna then in ruins from World War II Sonnet für Wien Op. 41, this comprehensive recording stewarded by the baritone Konrad Jarnot and soprano Adrienne Pieczonka with the steady support of Reild Mees’ piano is a welcome addition to Korngold’s discography.

Chicago College of Performing Arts Chamber Orchestra, Parra, Thakar
Cedille CDR90000-160

Chicago based American composer and associate professor of composition at Roosevelt University, Stacy Garrop’s first album of orchestral music is a collection of world premiere recordings. Mythology Symphony is a five-movement work inspired by famous female figures from Greek mythology with a compelling performance by conductor Alonda de la Parra leading the Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) Symphony Orchestra of Roosevelt University. Thunderwalker and Shadow, described as “a moving interplay of counterpoint, shifting textures, and profound emotion” is conductored by Peabody Conservatory-based Markand Thakar.

The prolific Garrop has elicited positive critical praise with Gramophone magazine spotlighting her as a composer whose work displays “vision and breadth.” In 2015, her oratorio Terra Nostra will receive its world premiere in San Francisco and her compositions ranging from choral to chamber, lieder to now orchestral have been performed by illustrious ensembles such as Avalon String Quartet, Capital Quartet and the esteemed choir Chanticleer.

MAHLER, G.: Symphony No. 1, "Titan" / Blumine
Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Lintu
Ondine ODE1264-5

The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hannu Lintu presents Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 with the original 2nd movement Blumine restored which Mahler excised after a few performances of the symphony. To this day, there is much discussion of Mahler’s decision to drop this lovely movement with many theories attached to the discussion. Nonetheless, this recording performs a valuable cultural service with its inclusion, especially in the hands of the very capable FRSO.

DONG, Kui: Differences Within Oneness
Arditti String Quartet
Other Minds OM2018

Imagine the sounds that one giant string instrument can make! I have long been attracted to the intriguing beauty of heterophony, which I would describe as “difference within oneness,” or “complexity growing out of similarity.” In writing this piece, my idea was that at the beginning, the string quartet acts like one gigantic instrument that later splits and evolves into four individuals. The four players, alternating between acting as one instrument and as four, perform the 10 movement piece without pausing between movements. In doing so, the quartet embarks on a musical journey that encompasses explosive energy, theatrical characters and gesture, and interwoven sonic texture, as well as contrasting materials such as timbre, momentum, melodic contour, and the details of contrast between sound and silence. – Kui Dong

MOZART, W.A.: String Quartets Nos. 21, 22 and 23
(Prussian Quartets)

Stradivari Quartett
Solo Musica SM230

The Stradivari Quartet shines in this collection that rightfully elevates Mozart’s Prussian Quartets, the last set of string quartets composed before his premature death. While the provenance of these quartets has been much debated over the years in some cases achieving the status of lore, what is indisputable is they originally were to include six quartets, but only three were published: K 575 in D Major, K 589 in B-Flat Major and K 590 in F Major, written in 1789 and 1790. While never reaching the profile of Mozart’s six “Haydn” quartets, there is a refined and transcendent quality these quartets are imbued with that in many ways was unprecedented in Mozart’s oeuvre.

SZYMANOWSKI, K.: Król Roger (Royal Opera House, 2015)
Jarman, Pirgu, Kwiecien, Begley, Ewing, Zwierko, Royal Opera House Chorus and Orchestra, Pappano
Opus Arte OABD7162D [Blu-ray] | OA1161D [DVD]

Kasper Holten’s production (The Royal Opera’s first) of Król Roger (King Roger) brought the opera back to the London stage after an absence of almost 40 years. Karol Szymanowski’s masterpiece powerfully presents the dilemmas of culture versus nature and man versus beast, and movingly depicts King Roger’s inner struggles as he moves from an impossible life of repressed desires to the other extreme, giving in to his own demons. Meanwhile Roger’s people, seduced by the promises of the mysterious Shepherd, are drawn towards totalitarianism and repression. Antonio Pappano conducts Szymanowksi’s opulent and beautiful score, with a cast including Mariusz Kwiecien as Roger (one of the greatest interpreters of the role today), Saimir Pirgu as the Shepherd, and Georgia Jarman in her Royal Opera debut as Roger’s loving queen Roxana.

‘‘... directed with flair, clarity and intelligence by Kasper Holten. Steffen Aarfing’s setting of a tiered arena dominated by a massive sculpted head is enormously impressive...’’ – The Daily Telegraph
