Capriccio C5156

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895–1968) was a composer and humanist. His life was characterized by a lasting tendency to discover himself as a component of ancient cultural traditions, first the Tuscan and then the Jewish one. On the other hand, he showed an inclination to withdraw from the historical present, on the one hand, due to his reserved disposition and, on the other, because of the tragic events that rocked his existence. In 1939, he took his leave of his country and emigrated to the USA to safeguard the future of his own family and above all protect the lives of his two children. Arturo Toscanini and Jascha Heifetz, who had already performed his music several times, supported him in this difficult period and made a substantial contribution to him obtaining a position as the composer of film music with Metro Goldwyn Mayer.

The Piano Concertos No. 1 in G major Op. 46 and No. 2 in F major Op. 92 were written in 1927 and 1936/37 respectively; the latter presumably while preparing for exile.

Carpe Diem

VISEE, R. de: Lute Music
Carpe Diem CD-16296

Toyohiko Satoh, one of the most important and influential lute players of the last century, plays on this recording the largely unknown late works of French baroque composer and lutenist Robert De Visée, guitar teacher to the King Luis XIV. Toyohiko Satoh plays on an original lute made by Laurentius Greiff in 1610, which gives this recording a very distinct sound and atmosphere.

Heide, Tomter, Norrkoping Symphony, Slobodeniouk
Dacapo 6.220599

Vagn Holmboe’s solo concertos for violin and viola are works that combine the composer’s own purist Nordic style with a huge declaration of love for the wild, dancing eastern European folk music that captivated him throughout his life. These premiere recordings by some of Scandinavia’s strongest string soloists – Norwegian Lars Anders Tomter and Swedish Erik Heide fronting the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under Dima Slobodeniouk – are joined by Holmboe’s Concerto for Orchestra, which has never been performed before.

PONCE, M.M.: Piano Works (Complete), Vol. 1
Grand Piano GP638

Manuel Ponce was the founder of Mexican musical nationalism, often incorporating the melodies of harmonised folk-songs into his music. Widely travelled—he studied in Europe, at first in Bologna and then, between 1925 and 1933, as a pupil of Dukas in Paris—Ponce assimilated a wide range of styles and influences, including European-influenced Romanticism, indigenous idioms and a more advanced harmonic language. This is the first of eight volumes devoted to Ponce’s complete piano music.

Choral Music - REGER, M. / TOBIAS, R. (Vivit!)
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Reuss
Ondine ODE1221-2

With this new release the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Daniel Reuss pay tribute to Max Reger (1873-1916) and Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918), a composer of the classical-romantic tradition and associated with the beginning of professional composition in Estonia. Reger connects the sacred and secular choral songs of this collection often with nature and its rhythm. Also Rudolf Tobias took up more secular topics for his sacred choral songs. Two of the most famous ones, “Eks teie tea” and “Otsekui hirv”, are included on this release and invite to get more familiar with his music.

Choral Concert - BRITTEN, B. / VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, R. / ELGAR, E. / KODALY, Z. (Sacred and Profane)
Collegium Vocale zu Franziskanern Luzern
Solo Musica SM185

Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), the creator of the epic War Requiem, is rightly regarded as the most important English composer of the 20th century. His works for a cappella choir show an overwhelming variety of styles, texts, and compositional techniques. And for these, choirs are extremely grateful. Benjamin Britten, who was known not only as a composer but also as an experienced practitioner, was able to precisely gauge the possibilities of each respective performer; he knew exactly which details in the score were necessary to achieve the desired effect. Excellent choral music is to be found in settings ranging from children’s and school choirs to oratorio choirs and professional ensembles. The choices made for this recording – major works from different creative phases throughout Britten’s life – reflect this diversity. The inclusion of works by William Byrd, Henry Purcell, Edward Elgar, and Ralph Vaughan Williams also affords an opportunity to trace a line of tradition in English choral music.

La Sylphide / Flower Festival in Genzano (1961, 1974)
Choreography by Bournonville
ICA Classics ICAD5099 [DVD]

Widely considered to be the first ‘romantic’ ballet, La Sylphide brims with features of the romantic literature of the time, such as elements of the supernatural, the loss of innocence and a deep sense of sadness. This film, recorded in 1961, seeks to provide a close representation of the ‘Bournonville style’, as a lack of dance notation in the 19th century leaves us without an authentic record of the original choreography. The film is an important record of the history of Bournonville’s La Sylphide, which has been dubbed as ‘one of the most enchanting ballets of all time’. (New York Times)

Spira Mirabilis
Idéale Audience 3079864 [Blu-ray Video] / 3079868 [DVD]

Spira Mirabilis is an extraordinary new project drawing together some of Europe’s finest young players. It offers a radical new approach to the classical music making. Mostly in their 20s and 30s, they created a dimension to study, practice and perform together symphonic repertoire without the guide of a conductor.

This blu-ray disc / double DVD includes the documentary “La Spira” which portraits the musicians and their intense work sessions and scenes from collective life, which documents their way of creating a special attitude and breaking down the traditional barriers between performer and audience.

JANACEK, L.: Cunning Little Vixen (The)
Glyndebourne, 2012
Opus Arte OABD7117D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1101D [DVD]

The tale of a quick-witted fox and her escape from confinement for a life in the forest that is by turns joyful and violent, The Cunning Little Vixen is an unsentimental parable of death and rebirth that lives through the instinctive and immediate world of nature, animal and human, which Janacek loved so much. Melly Still’s production for Glyndebourne finds the ‘delicate balance between whimsy and mysticism’ (Daily Telegraph) at the heart of the opera, which Vladimir Jurowski conducts ‘with lustrous style: you can hear the birds in the score, feel the sunshine and thrill to the starlit night sky in the final scene’ (Opera Today).
