The BerceuseOp. 83 ranks amongst Bowen’s most intimate scores, while the sophisticated Suite Mignonne demands the most delicate of touches from the pianist.

WAGNER, R.: Gluck - Iphigenie en Aulide
Nylund, Chorus Musicus Köln, Das Neue Orchester, C. Spering
Oehms Classics OC953

Whilst the concert and opera business continues to repeat Wagner‘s operas in ever new facets, Christoph Spering is interested in different aspects during the Gluck and Wagner years 2013/14. His serendipity led him to early Wagner and his adaptation of the Gluck opera Iphigenia in Aulis, from which Wagner formed an almost new opera. Wagner conducted the world premiere of his version at the Royal Court Opera in Dresden on 24 February 1847 – now Christoph Spering has made a new recording of it with an outstanding ensemble.

CORELLI, A.: Concerti Grossi, Op. 6
Sardelli, Modo Antiquo
Tactus TB650391

Recent research has revealed the existence of a practice which has been hitherto ignored: that of doubling the instrumental music composed and conducted by Corelli with all sorts of wind instruments. This practice forces a re-examination of the faithful reproduction of the compositions as printed, which has prevailed up until now. This is thus, the first complete performance of the twelve Concerti Grossi by Corelli which attempts to accurately reconstruct the works’ historical-musical context.

GAUBERT, P.: Violin Sonata in A Major / 3 Pieces / 4 Esquisses / Lamento / 3 Aquarelles
Phillips-Varjabedian, Demarquette, Jude
Timpani 1C1203

Philip Gaubert was a great flute master. But it is often forgotten that he began with the violin, which enabled him to support his family. He truly was a violinist, as attests the Concerto, released three years ago, as well as the Sonata and Quatre Esquisses — two world premieres —, which ideally exploit the instrument’s lyricism and delicacy of colours. But the cello is not to be outdone: already present on the orchestral disc, it is present here in highly virtuosic pieces.

Finally, another premiere: the Trois Aquarelles in the original instrumentation for violin (indicated before the flute), cello and piano, so this will be a discovery.

BRUCKNER, A.: Symphony No. 7
Accentus Music ACC-102177 [Blu-ray Video] / ACC-202177 [DVD]

With the release of Bruckner's 7th symphony Daniel Barenboim and the Staatskapelle Berlin prove themselves once again as veritable connoisseurs of Bruckner's music. The extraordinarily different and expressive interpretations of the entire "Bruckner – The Mature Symphonies" series are the unmistakable result of a lifelong engagement of Barenboim with Bruckner's oeuvre. In June 2010, the sublime performance of Bruckner's Seventh Symphony, recorded here, thrilled the audience to several minutes of applause.

The Seventh is characterised by musical vastness and dignity. After its world premiere in 1884 in Leipzig, it granted the composer his breakthrough and long-deserved recognition. Today it is regarded as a milestone in the history of music and has established itself as Bruckner's most famous work.

SCHRODER, Mario: Chaplin (Ballet)
Leipzig Ballet, 2013
EuroArts 2059824 [Blu-ray Video] /  2059828 [DVD]

The little guy with his mustache, his bowler hat and his bamboo cane is world-famous. But who is the man behind this figure? Mario Schröder wondered the same thing when choreographing Chaplin. Schröder’s ballet, ‘Chaplin’, is a grand, marvelous dream of a man in search of himself, in search of a language to deliver a direct message, for the indirect ones, he finds body language and thus his tone of truth. - Tanznetz

Opus Arte

MINKUS, L.: Don Quixote
Royal Ballet, 2013
Opus Arte OABD7143D [Blu-ray Video] /  OA1133D [DVD]

Carlos Acosta’s first venture directing one of ballet’s 19th century classics was eagerly anticipated, as was his own starring role in the production (as Basilio), opposite the Argentinian Royal Ballet principal Marianela Nuñez (Kitri). Packed cinemas for the live relay, as well as sold-out houses for his performances, testified to the draw the great Cuban dancer still exerts – and the audiences were not disappointed. Still built on Petipa’s original choreography, Acosta’s clear dramatic structure and vivid stage action gave the ‘boy gets girl despite her father’ story a more convincing air than usual, with Don Quixote’s parallel obsession with Dulcinea-Kitri coherently woven into the plot. Acosta’s and Nuñez’s performances were peerless, Tim Hatley’s stage designs vivid and apposite, and this production is surely destined to be a perennial Royal Ballet favourite.
