KISIELEWSKI, S.: Piano Pieces
CD Accord CDAccordACD210

Stefan Kisielewski was a man of many talents. His adventure with music began during his childhood with piano lessons. “The black box”, as he fondly called his favourite instrument, would accompany him throughout his life, until the very last bars of his Piano Concerto written just a few months before his death. The compositions selected for this CD by the outstanding pianist Magdalena Lisak, arranged chronologically, illustrate the development and changes in the style of a composer who never aimed to discover new worlds in music, but still left a lasting musical legacy worthy of his own extraordinary personality. His music betrays the same spirit of contrariness that inspired his numerous feature articles, papers and novels.

NØRGÅRD, P.: Symphonies Nos. 1 and 8
Vienna Philharmonic, Oramo
Dacapo 6.220574

With this world première recording, the Vienna Philharmonic offers new perspectives on the most visionary voice in Nordic music and one of the greatest symphonists of our time, Danish composer Per Nørgård (b. 1932). Conducted on this occasion by Sakari Oramo, these performances of Nørgård’s Symphonies 1 and 8 – two milestones composed with almost six decades between them – are the legendary orchestra’s first recording of new Nordic music.

Piano Recital: Kamangar, Tara - GLINKA, M.I. / HOSSEIN, A. / KHACHATURIAN, A.I. / SHOSTAKOVICH, D. (East of Melancholy)
Delos DE3471

Russia’s proximity to Muslim lands has resulted in considerable artistic cross-fertilization. American-Iranian pianist Tara Kamangar explores these connections as they apply to the traditions of Iran and Russia. On Tara’s first Delos album, we hear illustrative examples in works of several famous Russian composers. But her emphasis here is on the music of two fascinating 20th century Iranian composers virtually unknown in the West, Aminollah Hossein and Loris Tjeknavorian.

BAGDASARIAN, E.: Piano and Violin Music - 24 Preludes / Rhapsody / Nocturne
Ayrapetyan, V. Sergeev
Grand Piano GP664

Eduard Ivanovich Bagdasarian was a key figure in the modern development of Armenian music, and his piano works have a unique importance in an oeuvre which covered almost every genre. The tremendously varied 24 Preludes encompass all of the major and minor keys with the added colour of Armenian modes. This mastery of miniature forms contrasts with the impassioned and ambitious Rhapsody, while the archetypally Romantic Nocturne draws on the tradition of the great Russian Adagio.

GUNST, E.: Piano Music (Wanderer zwischen den Welten, Vagabond entre les mondes)
S. Lang
Oehms Classics OC899

At the University of Basle in 2010, the stored estate of Evgeny Gunst was surprisingly discovered. In his time, Evgeny Gunst (1877-1950) was a highly regarded artist. He associated with important Russian musical personalities, including Alexander Scriabin. After 1917, he immigrated to Paris, where, although active in the Parisian cultural environment, he died unrecognized and impoverished. With this CD, the pianist Susanne Lang hopes to rescue him from undeserved oblivion.

MESSIAEN, O.: Turangalîla-Symphonie
Hewitt, Hartmann-Claverie, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, H. Lintu
Ondine ODE1251-5

Ondine’s new recording of Olivier Messiaen’s magnum opus Turangalîla-Symphonie features the Finnish Radio Symphony led by Hannu Lintu, along with renowned soloists Angela Hewitt on piano as well as Valérie Hartmann-Claverie, who plays the rare electro-acoustic ondes Martenot. Within the microcosm of this vast work, Messiaen provides continuity and cohesion with recurrent musical images and reference points, redolent of the leit motifs, idées fixes or cyclic themes of the great Romantic composers.

Sono Luminus

BEETHOVEN, L. van: String Quartet No. 14
The Jasper String Quartet
Sono Luminus SL-D-97203

The Jasper String Quartet breathes new life into this well-known late string quartet by one of the world’s most beloved composers in this exclusively digital release by Sono Luminus.

One of Beethoven’s personal favorite works, this quartet was dedicated to Baron Joseph von Stutterheim as a gesture of gratitude for taking his nephew Karl into the army. In this cyclical composition, Beethoven composes the quartet in six distinct key areas. Beginning in C sharp minor and ends in C sharp major, the finale directly quotes the opening fugue theme in the first movement in its second thematic area.

SALIERI, A.: Overtures / Scherzos / Divertimentos
Pollastri, Amati Quartet
Tactus TB751903

Antonio Salieri’s (1750-1825) catalog of instrumental music is not particularly extensive. The symphonic works known from available recordings include two symphonies, several concerti, serenades and the like. There is, also, a small body of chamber works, including those present on this disc. Oboist Paolo Pollastri (b. 1960) has been first oboe of numerous orchestras and performs often as a soloist. The Canadian Amati Quartet made its international debut in 2005 and indulges in a diverse repertoire.

IBERT, J.: Chamber Music for Winds
Demarquette, Deshayes, Ensemble Initium, Mao-Takacs
Timpani 1C1210

In addition to Escales, Angélique, the Flute Concerto, Chansons de Don Quichotte and a few other works always mentioned, there is a rich, little-known catalogue.

This disc presents the quasi-totality of his works for winds. Along with composers such as Pierné and Gaubert, Ibert shared the gift of constantly renewed melodic invention, an outpouring of ideas that are always felicitous.

This is the fourth album by the now-renowned Ensemble Initium, joined here by a few stars: the mezzo Karine Deshayes, cellist Henri Demarquette for what is doubtless one of the most masterful versions of this Concerto, and a newcomer in the person of the young conductor Clément Mao-Takacs, founder and director of the Secession Orchestra, of which this is one of the very first discs.
