Carl NIELSEN Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3
New York Philharmonic • Alan Gilbert
Dacapo 6.220623

‘Music is life, and like it inextinguishable,’ said the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). With indomitable courage and infinite curiosity Nielsen developed into one of the 20th century’s greatest symphonists, after being raised in the Danish countryside as the son of a poor folk musician. With this new series of recordings, Nielsen crosses the Atlantic as the New York Philharmonic and their Music Director Alan Gilbert shed new light on the composer’s uniquely Nordic symphonic sound.

BOILING POINT: Music of Kenji Bunch
ALIAS Chamber Ensemble
Delos DE3430

Composer Kenji Bunch has been attracting much attention lately, both nationally and abroad. Also a concert violist and bluegrass performer, his music offers and eclectic mix of roots music, modern rock and jazz – but mostly within the context of sophisticated classical form. The title piece, Boiling Point (featuring a teakettle!), begins gently before coming to a hard-rock-style ‘boil’. The five movements of String Circle flirt with various types of classic roots music (ragtime, blues, country) – yet you know a classical voice is at work. Three other fascinating works round out the program. The GRAMMY® nominated ALIAS Chamber Ensemble is a forward looking group of 11 musicians (strings, winds, harp, etc) that cultivates an ‘out of the box’ approach to their programming.

MDR Klassik MDR1201

This recording represents the kick-off for the new CD series of MDR KLASSIK – The classical label of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) and its Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir. The choral symphonic start is made with three live-recordings of Mendelssohn’s incidental music: The present Volume 1 Athalie to the play by Jean Racine – made to mark the 200th birthday of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 2009 with the intention to draw attention to Mendelssohn’s all too seldom performed incidental music. The versions of the play scripts used for Athalie demonstrate clearly the way in which Mendelssohn had approached the task of composition by referring to relevant historic sources as the spoken interludes by Eduard Devrient.

Philharmoniker Hamburg • Simone Young
Oehms Classics OC413

The common nickname ‘Tragic Symphony’ was only officially used once (at the first performance in Vienna) and then never again; it did not make its way into published editions of the score.

STRAVINSKY The Rite of Spring / SIBELIUS Symphony No. 5
London Symphony Orchestra
Leonard Bernstein

ICA Classics ICAD5082 [DVD]

The films on this DVD are taken from the ‘Symphonic Twilight’ series of TV programmes made in the mid-Sixties that were the brainchild of Humphrey Burton, then the newly appointed Head of Music and Arts Programmes for the BBC. In 1965 Burton persuaded Bernstein to conduct the LSO at the Royal Albert Hall and the resulting Mahler 8 was a spectacular occasion, broadcast to the nation. The following year, they put together these programmes, film specifically for the new television audience. The works Bernstein chose to record are twentieth-century orchestral masterpieces, for which he is known to be a champion. His recordings of Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony for CBS Records and Deutsche Grammophon were acclaimed by critics worldwide, and his interpretation of The Rite of Spring in 1959 elicited an enthusiastic ‘Wow!’ from Stravinsky himself! They are accompanied on this DVD by an in-depth interview, given here as a bonus and subtitled in French and German.

Chorus of De Nederlandse Opera

Francisco Negrin, stage director

Opus Arte OABD7111D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1091D [DVD]

In Vincenzo Bellini’s last opera, Elvira’s love for Arturo overcomes the power-games in Puritan England, staged with darkly dramatic flair by Francisco Negrin as a world of blind dogma. Mariola Cantarero is compelling as the heroine on the verge of insanity in one of the greatest mad scenes in the history of opera. One of the leading lyric tenors today, John Osborn sings Arturo with fearless commitment and some spectacular top notes. In the pit is the bel canto specialist Giuliano Carella.
