STRAVINSKY, I.: Sacre du printemps (Le) (version for orchestra / version for piano 4 hands)
Basel Symphony Orchestra, Davies, Namekawa
Basel Symphony Orchestra SOB06

The music of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” has come down to us in the form of the orchestral score (which was laid aside amid the turmoil of World War I and only published in 1922) and a piano duet version published shortly before its 1913 premiere. Both versions are presented here. These are not two aesthetically equal realizations of one and the same compositional concepts. Not only was “The Rite” conceived from the outset as an orchestral work, it also owes its overwhelming impact in great measure to the colorful and often deliberately percussive sound of its instrumental forces.

ZIMMERMANN, B.A.: Alagoana / Sinfonie in einem Satz / Photoptosis / Stille und Umkehr
Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic Orchestra, Steffens
Capriccio C5213

Zimmermann was initially strongly influenced by the polyphonic currents of neo-Classicism and Expressionism in the wake of Hindemith, Jarnach and Stravinsky, but his own voluminous and daring characteristics quickly crystallized. It was not to be an easy position for him over the next two decades, as he felt himself to be the eldest among the young composers and at best saw companions in his elder colleagues Luigi Dallapiccola and Karl Amadeus Hartmann. It was only the premiere of his opera Die Soldaten that brought him broad and undisputed recognition, and Die Soldaten was soon considered the most important German opera since Alban Berg. As start for this new CD edition “modern times”, conductor Karl-Heinz Steffens, his orchestra, and the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, take care of the most unknown orchestral pieces of this composer.

Israeli harpsichordist, some-time conductor of the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra and Barrocade Vocale co-founder Yizhar Karshon plays one of the “six suites” by Dieupart in its original edition as a solo harpsichord suite.

CLEMENTI, M.: Piano Music
CD Accord CDAccordACD199

The father of the pianoforte – so says the inscription on Muzio Clementi’s Westminster Abbey tombstone. These words, and the very fact the he was buried in that special place, testify to Clementi’s position in Britain. In the course of his long, tempestuous life, Clementi achieved international success as a composer, pianist, music publisher and piano builder. A versatile talent, he has gone down in history first and foremost as the author of a vast collection of piano sonatas (variously estimated at between sixty and eighty) and one of the key figures in the formation of the sonata cycle itself.

Mortensen, Frederiksen, Petri
OUR Recordings 6.220608

Axel Borup-Jørgensen (1924-2012) was a meticulous modernist who followed his own distinctive path. His works exude distinctive and intense nature mysticism. The five works presented here – including three world premiere recordings – span the most important period of the composer’s artistic development, from Music for Percussion and Viola, op. 18 (1956) to his cathartic Periphrasis, op. 156 (first version, 1977) and all feature the full array of percussion instruments found in 20th century music, bringing Borup-Jørgensen’s exquisitely crafted sound universe to life. Standing at the center of this universe is Gert Mortensen, one of the world’s leading scholars and performers of music for percussion.

Cello Recital: Wagner, Markus - BECKER, H. / KLENGEL, J. / TORTELIER, P.
Solo Musica SM214

This CD presents first recordings of two original, very different and thus far unknown Romantic works for solo cello: Julius Klengel’s Suite in D minor op. 56 and Hugo Becker’s Fantastische Suite, op. 14. Both of these early 20th century works represent the two leading cellists’ discovery of composing late in life. Like Paul Tortelier’s strongly Bach-oriented Suite in D minor, they are important additions to the solo cello repertoire.

PALESTRINA, G.P. da: Madrigals, Book 1
Concerto Italiano, Alessandrini
Tactus TB521604

The Primo Libro di Madrigali a quarto voci was, chronologically speaking, the second work published by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. On the publication’s title page, the composer refers to himself as “Cantore nella Cappella di N[ostro] S[ignore]”, a title which in Rome at that time represented the highest position to which a musician might aspire. The highly regarded Concerto Italiano and their founder-director Rinaldo Alessandrini perform these light, lovely and expressive secular songs from the Renaissance’s greatest sacred music composer.
