GOULD, M.: American Salute (An)
President's Own United States Marine Band, Colburn
Altissimo 75442202572

Altissimo! Recordings is releasing this collection to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Morton Gould’s birth (December 10, 1913) and honor his legacy of American band music. Morton Gould: An American Salute focuses on two aspects of Gould’s contributions: his unforgettable patriotic miniatures and his original band compositions. In both arenas he has left a body of work that should be enjoyed for generations to come.

BRAHMS, J.: Cello Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2
Krijgh, Amara
Capriccio C5173

I used to play the fiddle myself’, Johannes Brahms once told his Viennese composer colleague Richard Heuberger, ‘but my instrument was the cello. I played concerts on it’. That Brahms’ two cello sonatas were ‘miraculous pearls of chamber music’, as a critic wrote in the Neue Berliner Musikalische Zeitung in 1873, was sadly not recognized by all contemporaries at once. Some listeners were simply floored by the dense texture of the compositions. But a short time later, they were to establish themselves everywhere and have ranked among the outstanding works in the cello repertoire up to today.

Piano Recital - DEBUSSY, C. / STRAVINSKY, I. / NEWMAN, D.
Von Oeyen
Delos DE3454

The album’s most substantial offerings are the twelve Preludes for Piano, Book I, by the Impressionist master Claude Debussy: among the greatest pianistic “tone paintings” ever composed; followed by Debussy’s sensually passionate (and virtuosic) L’isle Joyeuse. We then hear Igor Stravinsky’s Petrushka: Three Movements for Piano – a brilliant pianistic tour de force based on his second great ballet score; this gives way to his “Piano—Rag Music,” a heady (and happy) cubist approach to the American Ragtime form.

Dorian Sono Luminus

Harpsichord Recital - POWELL, M. / COWELL, H. / ROREM, N. / ADLER, S. (Toccatas: Modern American Music for Harpsichord)
Dorian Sono Luminus DSL-92174

Sono Luminus presents this engaging and exciting grouping of modern works for the harpsichord that takes full advantage of all of the tonal and harmonic characteristics of this dynamic instrument. This virtuosic performance by GRAMMY® nominated harpsichordist Jory Vinikour. This album brings a new musical spin to the instrument which is better associated with Bach, Rameau, and Couperin, than rousing composers here. Towards the beginning of the 20th century, after more than a century of obscurity, the harpsichord enjoyed a conspicuous revival. This spirit of revival continues in this latest Sono Luminus release, with many of the works on Toccatas written for Mr. Vinikour.

Grand Piano

NENOV, D.: Piano Music
Grand Piano GP652

Dimitar Nenov was a leading figure of early 20th-century Bulgarian classical music. The entire range of his solo piano works is covered on this recording, from the austere and dissonant Cinema Suite to the romantic Etudes and exquisite Theme and Variations in F sharp major. The highly charged Toccata is Nenov’s most popular work, while Fairy Tale and Dance, his last work for piano, is the most distilled example of his art.

BRAHMS, J.: Clarinet Quintet (version for viola and string quartet) / BRIDGE, F.: Lament / MANN, R.: Dreamtime
D.A. Carpenter
Ondine ODE1246-2

The starting point for this release is an invitation Carpenter received from the Berlin Philharmonic to perform a chamber music concert with some of their soloists – the Clarinet Quintet and Lament are live recordings from this concert in February 2013. Carpenter appeared on the front cover of the Strad in August and a few months earlier was the subject of a three-page article in the New York Times.

Solo Musica

Piano Recital - BACH, J.S. / BRAHMS, J.
Solo Musica SM195

Miku Nishimoto-Neubert has performed widely in Europe, Japan and North America as soloist, chamber-musician and as accompanist, concentrating on the music of Bach, German Romantic composers and the modern classics. There she finds the figurative and formal clarity, which, besides the sensitive qualities of touch, characterise her playing. A critic writing about her recent CD of works by Bach spoke of “a capricious sophistication of the spirit” and “a meditative introspection”. Notwithstanding all her technical proficiency, it is the intensity with which she seeks the inner spirit of the music which marks the uniqueness of her interpretations and makes them memorable experiences.

Chamber Music - SANZ, G. / FALCONIERI, A. / PICCININI, A. / CAZZATI, M. (Dances on Movable Ground)
Yarlung Records YAR96819

“From the nobility of Europe, to the petit bourgeoisie reading Thonoit’s Arbeau’s Orchesographie, to the already pregnant bride in Brueghel’s The Peasant Wedding, everybody danced their way through the rituals of life…. Their music, like their dance, reflected a delicate balance between the restraints of culture and convention, and ingenious flourishes of improvisation….” – Adam Gilbert

MOZART, W.A.: Missa solemnis in C Minor, K. 139, "Waisenhausmesse" / SCHUBERT, F.: Mass No. 6 in E-Flat Major, D. 950
Accentus Music ACC-10261 [Blu-ray Video] / ACC-20261 [DVD]

A “touching and magnificent reunion” (Der Standard). The public and press enthusiastically celebrated the long‐awaited return of Claudio Abbado to the Salzburg Festival in 2012. The conductor brought with him Mozart’s youthful Mass K. 139, the so‐called Waisenhausmesse, and Schubert’s late Mass in E flat major. In a fascinating way, Abbado succeeded in merging the singers and instrumentalists into a total collaborative effort: “Seldom has one heard such a perfect balance between choir, orchestra, and vocal soloists; one has also seldom heard such a beautifully coordinated and perfectly balanced vocal ensemble” (Salzburger Nachrichten).

JANACEK, L.: Cunning Little Vixen (The)
Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, 2009
Arthaus Musik 108094 [Blu-ray Video] / 101697 [DVD]

Based on an illustrated tale published as a newspaper serial, this fanciful opera is one of Janáček’s true masterworks – at once charming, frightening, tragic and, in the end, life-affirming. The Cunning Little Vixen has been seldom staged in Italy, and this Florence production stars Seiji Ozawa as conductor and Laurent Pelly as stage director and costume designer. This production received rave reviews for beautifully bringing to life on stage the opera’s fantasy world of animal protagonists. This is a work that can be enjoyed by not only classical music fans but by anyone, from child to adult.

VERDI, G.: Aida (3D)
Arena di Verona, 2000
Opus Arte OABD7122D [Blu-ray Video] / OA1107D [DVD]

The grand scale and magnificent acoustics of the Roman arena in Verona are ideally suited to the pageantry of Verdi’s Egyptian opera, presented here in a staging that is true to the original 1913 production, framed by obelisks and sphinxes and filled with chorus and dancers. Chinese soprano Hui He has won international acclaim for her portrayal of the eponymous slave girl whose forbidden love for the war hero Radamés (Marco Berti, the experienced Verdi tenor) brings death to them both.
