BERMEL Canzonas Americanas
Alarm Will Sound
Cantaloupe CA-21088

Canzonas Americanas marries two postmodern forces – American composer/clarinetist Derek Bermel and the contemporary chamber band Alarm Will Sound. Sharing a joy for stylistic eclecticism, complexity, and clashing dissonances, they form a remarkable recording that combines Bermel’s wild range of instrumental colors with the tight rhythmic ensemble that his music demands.

Juilliard String Quartet
Newton Classics NC8802159

When one considers the string quartet, one tends to think of the great Germanic composers, with their French counterparts often forgotten. This collection, however, brings together a series of French string quartets that are extraordinary in their own right. They are performed by the acclaimed Juilliard String Quartet, established in 1946 by Robert Mann and William Schuman whose stated credo was to “play new works as if they were established masterpieces, and established masterpieces as if they were new.”

Arthaus 100389 [DVD]

Live recording from the Teatro Valeria Moriconi, Jesi 2010

The 2010 Jesi production is conscious of the complexity of Flaminio for all its seeming simplicity and cleverly exploits the suggestive milieu of the Teatro Valeria Moriconi, in particular its shape and relatively small scale. Without any attempt at realism, the production concentrates on establishing a kind of meta-theatrical relationship to this repertoire work which sets out to highlight the interweaving and overlayering of truth and fiction, passion and irony, tragedy and comedy.

In the first-ever staging of this menacing drama at the Globe Theatre, Matthew Dunster’s production features Paul Hilton as the arrogant, power-hungry Faustus and Arthur Darvill as the sardonic Mephistopheles, and includes several impressive magical stunts along the way.
