This month we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Carl Nielsen, on June 9, 1865.

As the most important Danish composer of the first part of the twentieth century, Nielsen was prolific in almost all genres. He dissociated himself from Late Romanticism in favour of the new currents in European music, without at any time abandoning his very personal and idiosyncratic style.

His six symphonies become increasingly adventurous as the cycle progresses; they are essentially tonal, emotionally direct works, alternating long lines of melody with passages of blazing energy. The three concertos he wrote respectively for clarinet, flute and violin have also found a place in the standard repertoire.
