Tomás Cotik

“I was very humbled by the reaction of the critics to my first Piazzolla album, Tango Nuevo, which was released by Naxos in 2013. When Gary Burton invited us a few years ago to play a concert in a series he directed after listening to that album, I decided to use the opportunity as a challenge to create some new adaptations of works by Piazzolla that had been on my bucket list for a long time.

2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Piazzolla’s death, and this second album was a perfect excuse to celebrate his legacy. These adaptations of his works are full of effects, virtuosity, fireworks and rhythmic intensity that continuously alternate with slow Piazzollean melodies.”

In the year of the 25th anniversary of Piazzolla’s death, Argentinean-born violinist Tomás Cotik and Chinese-American pianist Tao Lin follow their critically acclaimed Tango Nuevo [8.573166] with more of Piazzolla’s richest and most exciting compositions. These fresh adaptations for mostly two or three musicians preserve and celebrate the Nuevo tango master’s legacy. ‘I think that lovers of tango music will definitely want this fascinating disc’, wrote Fanfare of Tango Nuevo.

“An exceptional point of view on Piazzolla’s broad range of work. The romance, longing and violence are all here…this disc is more pure rendering of Piazzolla’s classical side”
